“Fantasic monastery hideaway in a lovely city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

Staying in this hotel is a wonderful experience in time travel rather than just a night's sleep. Behind its modest street presence is an ancient monastery where you occupy rooms that have been used for hundreds of years. Spacious corridors and super high ceilings make you want to walk around doing Gregorian chants. You can sense how the monastery was a refuge from the rest of the city with enclosed walls of the hotel and then a massive central square.
Parking and car access is a breeze and so is access to the city sights.
We arrived unannounced on our wedding anniversary and were upgraded to a nicer room.
Service was wonderful.
The pedestrian access to the sights of this magnificent city is excellent.
Above all make sure you pay to get a room that overlooks the courtyard otherwise you will not do justice to your experience.
I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room that overlooks the central courtyard. This is a must.

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for your positiv comment, we are very satisfy to learn that you enjoyed your stay at the Cloitre Saint-Louis. It's very important for us to propose to our guest a very good experience in Avignon.

As you explain, the Cloitre Saint-Louis is a very special hotel in an old jesuit school dated back of 1589, with a beautiful chapel inside. This historic monument offers a wonderful courtyard with
plane trees tricentenary, and on the other part a beautiful private garden.

We provide to our guest a restaurant with the view on the courtyard, or served in the garden during the high season. You can find the beautiful swimming pool on the top of the hotel with the view on the dome of the chapel.

We are very delighted to learn that you enjoyed the good location of the Cloitre Saint-Louis, in the heart of Avignon, only 10 min by walk to the Pope's Palace and the famous bridge (private car park available in the hotel).

We look forward to welcoming you back very soon, or may be during the famous Festival of Avignon (July)!

With my best regards,

We stayed here for one night and although the setting is really wonderful and the garden and courtyard are beautiful. We stayed in the new part and felt that the room was large but quite spartan. Having seen it we would stay in the old part. The breakfast was expensive and not very good. We ended up spending $400 dollars for one night and that is more than the experience was worth.

Dear Guest,

First of all, we would like to thank you for having chosen the Cloitre Saint-Louis during your stay in Avignon and for taking the time to send us your feedback via Tripadvisor.

It's so important for us to remain attentive to the needs and feedback from our customers to always maintain a right level of performance.

We are delighted to know that you enjoyed the beautiful courtyard, and the nice private garden between the 2 wings. The Cloitre Saint-louis is date back to 1589, an it's a very charming historic monument with a private chapel Inside, in the heart of Avignon (10 min by walk from the Pope's Palace).

As you mention the room in the contemporary wing are quite large, with a loggia in each room with view on the private garden. All rooms are very quiet.
Moreover, our identity and deep personality is based undeniably on the alliance of these two styles: the historic character and contemporary through a decoration that we want absolutely sober to keep the authenticity of the cloister.

However we deeply regret your appreciation about the breakfast, and we will do our best to understand what happen during your stay.

We hope have the pleasure to welcome you soon again at the CLOITRE SAINT-LOUIS.

Kind Regards,

Great location 10 minutes walk from the Palais des Papes, tucked away behind the main shopping street, Lovely old stone building - calm, elegant courtyard with fountain. But our "superior" double rooms were in the modern extension and felt like study bedrooms in an upmarket college hall of residence. Shabby carpets, scuffed paintwork, cramped bathrooms and very poor sound insulation. Utilitarian furniture has seen better days. Maybe the "Exclusive" rooms in the old part of the hotel are better. The service doesn't compensate. The staff were pleasant but there are too few of them and they seem inexperienced and lacking overall direction/management. At breakfast, the waiter tried to make us sign a receipt before we were even seated - and before the buffet had been replenished. The breakfast was expensive at 16 Euros - go once to enjoy the view over the courtyard then find a local cafe instead. So, a lovely building, perfectly located but I doubt I'll be going back.

Room Tip: Look at rooms in the old part - the modern extension is like a college hall of residence and too bas...

We spent a great time (4 nights) in Avignon at the Hotel Cloitre Saint Louis (CSL).
The CLS is per se a great place in the hearth of Avignon. An old jesuit monastery build in the 17th century and its new attached very modern building designed by the French architect J Nouvel.

If I start to say that this is not a 4 star hotel, here my comments. The staff is not professional and the restaurant managed by young very motivated employees but unfortunately totally incompetent. They barely know the menu card and the vines. Definitely untrained and badly managed.
- The food has nothing to do with a 4 star hotel.
- I understand that this old very amazing and beautiful building is somehow difficult to be kept clean and up to the standard of a new 4 star hotel. Nevertheless, all windows are dirty, not cleaned - this is unacceptable. The cleaning staff is not very well equipped and absolutely inefficient. Rooms, bathroom, hallways, are never really clean.
- Such an old building needs a lot of maintenance but unfortunately is deficient.

I do strongly believe that the hotel management is totally absent and does not care how the customer feels. They do not realize that they are in a competitive environment and that they might lose customers......
And again, the French tourist agency is right to say that the place is a 4 star hotel - but definitely not under the current management. A serious audit and a new professional management is the best cure I can recommend for this very beautiful place

Room Tip: I could imagine that the new rooms might be cleaner, but the charm is to stay in the old monastery p...

Dear Guest,

We thank you for having chosen the CLOITRE SAINT-LOUIS for your stay in Avignon and for having taken the time to share your experience with us.

You could enjoy the magnificence of the cloister, an historic building, an old Jesuit school dated back to 1589, with a beautiful chapel inside (with a private access for our Customer)... all this in the heart of Avignon!

That's why, it is true that the building is not conventional, but we put stress on the cleaning, it's fundamental and we are completely uncompromising about this point! In our defense, it is to be considered as as the month of May was extremely wet! So in these conditions, it's so difficult to keep always our windows very clean.
However contrary to what you may think, the management team is clearly affected to the expectations of our customers. It's our priority, it can not be otherwise, especially for trace back all these points to our owners.
That's why, each year we will renovate any part of the hotel, or any rooms, it will be the same process for 2013 and 2014.
I can assure you that all your comments will be forwarded to managers, including your experience at the restaurant.

We hope have the pleasure to welcome you soon again at the CLOITRE SAINT-LOUIS, to show you the hotel differently.

Kind regards,

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights in July. The old cloister is tastefully converted, and it has an excellent and quiet location in the historic centre of Avignon. First we got a mezzanine room. The room felt worn down, it was very warm even though there was a A/C. There was a WC at the entrance of the room, before the stairs up to the bed and bathroom. The bathroom had a bathtub and handheld shower, with hardly any pressure, and it was impossible for any person with normal hight to stand upright. I think it is the first time I've complained about a room, but this time we did. After sleeping there one night we were moved to the old part of the hotel, in a cool room. The interior was modern and very modest - quite suitable for an old monastery. The bathroom was large with a shower. The breakfast was good, we had our breakfast outside in the courtyard. the staff was very helpful, they didn't make a fuss about wanting to change rooms, they made restaurant reservations for us, and gave us good advice on what to see in Avignon and the surroundings. There is a pool on the roof. I think I would stay again if we return to Avignon, but will be very specific on what type of room I want.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the old part of the building

Dear guest,

Thank you so much for you great comment about the Cloitre Saint-Louis. We are very delighted to see that you enjoyed your stay in Avignon. It's a big satisfaction for us, to read your good experience at the hotel, and the restaurant too.
I can see that you prefer the cloister part, and find the modern wing less attractiv. The rooms are situated in 2 wings: the historic wing and the Contemporary Wing. It is modern design and an integral part of the cloister. Our identity and deep personality based undeniably on the alliance of these two styles: the historic character and contemporary through a decoration that we want absolutely sober and refined to keep the true spirit of this time and this classified not distort.
We hope that we will have the pleasure to welcome you again.

We have just returned from a ten day stay at this hotel, so we got to know it pretty well. We had a room which overlooked the courtyard in the old part of the building.
The building itself was fabulous, a real treat to stay in. Tastefully converted into a Hotel but still retaining it's charm and dignity.
The room was clean and very airy, it had an adequate bathroom with a bath and shower, the toilet was separate from the bathroom and only had a cold water tap for the sink.
So far, so good, but you may have noticed that I only gave this Hotel three stars, that's because, out of the ten nights we stayed there, we only had about two nights that were undisturbed. The hotel seems to cater for a very transient clientele, some it seems from the river cruise companies that cruise the Rhone, many of whom are on a completely different time zone to Europe, this means that they are talking on the telephone to the folks back home (or to each other) at any time between midnight and 4 in the morning! They of course should be able to do this, but the echo from the high ceiling coupled with the almost complete lack of soundproofing (especially on the partition door) meant that the conversations were so loud that I found myself joining in! That's the only reason for the poor score.
The restaurant was very good, with charming staff, albeit with a limited menu.

Room Tip: Choose one without a door between rooms!

We stayed in Hotel Cloitre Saint Louis for 2 nights while we explored Avignon and it is a good place to stay if you are arriving by TGV as the Navette stop (shuttle from TGV station) is a very short walk away. We stayed in the old monastic part, which I am pleased about as the new modern extension is seriously unattractive to look at and to access - more like an indoor fire escape! Our room was spacious and immaculately clean - it is also fair to say it has a spartan feel but that was what we were expecting as we knew its monastic heritage. The lift is very small but adequate when the hotel is not very busy. Dinner was superb with a lovely view of the lit courtyard and its spectral Plane trees and breakfast adequate. Staff were friendly and efficient.

Room Tip: Stay in the old part of the hotel overlooking the courtyard but don't expect luxury just comfort...
