“Could do much better. Well located, but can't cope if busy.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2012

We had booked an "Exclusive Double Room" via Booking.com. When we arrived quite tired after a 400 mile drive we were told that we "had no booking". I can only presume that they'd "lost" our booking as they clearly had a large party booked in on a conference that night. We eventually managed to get booked into a smaller room in the new wing for €40- less per night (but that was probably just standard rate for that room) plus free breakfast worth €32- per day (but that was only after we'd whinged quite a bit). We were not at all impressed with how the staff handled this. The new room overlooked a courtyard which was very noisy from rowdy guests (the conference attendees?). Restaurant was fully booked.
The next morning breakfast was absolutely mad. Narrow dining area in the cloister and extremely busy due to the conference guests. The staff tried hard to keep things topped up, but didn't succeed.
We viewed the Exclusive Room we should have had - was nice enough, but we didn't think it worth switching rooms for just one night. In the meantime, we had contacted Booking.com to inform them of the mix-up on check-in - they responded very quickly and efficiently, and got us another €20- per night off the Standard Room rate.
The conference obviously finished that day, so the second morning's breakfast was a completely different experience - plenty of space, quiet and nothing running out.
The hotel is well located within the old city walls. Secure car park is good, and wi-fi OK.
Avignon is well worth visiting - nice to walk around, albeit with quite a few drop-outs hanging around with their dogs. The tour of the Palais des Papes was very good - not too busy, and with a free audio guide.
There is no shortage of restaurants in town - we dined in a couple of the slightly less touristy places away from the main square, which were very good.
In summary, a well-located hotel in a nicely refurbished historic building, but reception staff poor and can be quite noisy. Try to avoid staying when there's any sort of conference going on, as they clearly can't cope properly if the hotel is full.

Very good location within the walls of the old city. The bus stop for the TGV station is 2 minutes away and the central station is just across the road. There are plenty of bars and restaurants around.
The old part of the hotel is beautiful and very atmospheric. The room we stayed in was in the new, very modern part of the hotel. It was spacious, with a lounge area and a balcony. The bathroom was good with small bath and a large, separate powerful shower. The toilet is between the bathroom and bedroom and is tiny - way, way too tiny and very claustrophobic. Soundproofing in the rooms is excellent.
The staff at this hotel are not very welcoming. There was one waiter/barman called Sebastian who was excellent but the others were not the staff I would expect in a 4 star hotel. We arrived back from breakfast one morning to find the cleaner in our bathroom and as it was extremely cold in the corridor we walked through to our seating area. The cleaner just left without saying a word, taking her key card with her and leaving us in total darkness! At breakfast one morning there was only a spoon covered in egg by the cooked items so I asked for a fork to serve the bacon, this was literally slammed down in front of me. The bar was left mostly unattended in the evening. Breakfast Items were not replaced. Over the course of 3 mornings scrambled egg, croissants, yoghurts, marmalade and french bread ran out and none were replaced. We had 2 evening meals in the restaurant and some of the food was beautiful and some not so good. They ask you to choose your dessert when ordering starter and main course but you don't always want one if you are already full! My sister in law and myself ordered chicken with panfried potatoes but it arrived with pasta and no explanation. This restaurant is not cheap so that should not happen. I enjoyed my stay in this hotel but there were to many niggles for me to recommend it without reservation.

My wife and I stayed her in late October. The hotel is very well situated in the main street of Avignon and easy walking distance from the train station but some distance from the TGV station. We had had a difficult day of travel as a result of a de-railment and arrived about 8.30pm at night. Service on arrival at the small reception hardly excited us. No offer was made with our luggage and we trekked to the new part of the Hotel by ourselves. Access to the room was up a flight of stairs and with heavy luggage was difficult. Service was poor hardly a smile and certainly no acknowledgement by staff in the breakfast area. Breakfast menu was fine and our one meal in the restaurant was good. All in all not what we had expected.

Room Tip: Avoid the twin rooms. Also not sureabout airconditioning in summer

We were with a group, and had large renovated rooms in the new wing. They were like suites with the toilet separated from the bathroom and the bedroom. We enjoyed breakfast, which was included for us, and found the staff at the desk very helpful. Everyone went to separate restaurants for dinner one night and all were pleased with the recommendations staff made. They also made the reservations. The location is fantastic. We had stayed in Avignon 10 years ago in a very small room at Hotel d'Europe, and preferred Hotel Cloitre Saint Louis. We also had a group dinner here and enjoyed the food very much.

We stayed in the older part of the hotel. Large rooms, good bathroom, fridge. The rooftop pool is great. Only a block away from the bus stop for the bus to the TGV station, walking distance to everything in town and near the train station (not the TGV station)

We were really happy with the hotel. Staff was nice, room was realy big, nice bed... no charge for 3rd person in the room. Location is just inside the wall, you can walk all over. The building of the hotel is really, really nice... this old but renewed place.

So, all was perfect, but in the last night we had some flees in our bed, which anoyed us. I am sure it was an isolated fact (family members in other room had no issues).

The stone vaulted ceiling of the breakfast room, a corridor in monastery days, is beautiful, as is the view of the courtyard with its six giant plane trees.
The hotel's location within the city walls is convenient.
The first thing I noticed when I walked into my so-called "superior" room in the "new" section was the sour sewer stink (from the shower is my guess.) But I adapted to the smell after about half an hour so that it was not that unpleasant while I was in the room. It was only bothersome each time I returned to the room from the fresh air outside.
There are no drapes to block lights from the "garden"/kitchen view. The room had a patio with slat-like blinds for privacy. Unfortunately, several were missing or broken so that others could look into the room from the garden, kitchen or the elevator area.
Don't look for an extra paper napkin at breakfast, a cost-saving feature, no doubt. Nor coffee pots at the self-service urns (obviously to avoid excessive coffee consumption and/or waste.) Guests have to go back and forth balancing their cups as they wind their way past other guests and tables in the narrow breakfast room. Coffee and food items quickly ran out and were not replaced during my stay.
This hotel could be great with a change of management, one that truly cares. The hotel's deficiencies are excused away by the current management with the explanation that "we've always had these problems with the rooms and don't have the budget to fix them"and "the hotel is heavily booked and everyone comes at one time so the staff can't keep up."
