“A modern landmark as well”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

Since 'Arelate' (Latin name of Arles) was the first Roman capital of Gaul, it has what any other Roman city has. This theatre may not be the largest nor the most preserved in existence, it has a charm of its own. The remaining marble columns of the stage have become a sort of iconic landmark for the city. Nowadays, it is used during the summer festival for all kind of entertainments (singers, plays, slide shows, etc..) It is also where the Queen of Arles is formerly presented to the people when it is time to elect a new one.

“There is a better one just a few miles from there”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

Didn't go in, because we didn't think we needed to do both this one and the one in Orange, which was better. But you could see through the fence there wasn't much to see

“Ineresting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012

once again fascinating to see how they have restored it yet still use it for modern days concerts. The video presentation helped a lot to understand how it was and how it was restored.

“Not much left, but what there is, is beautiful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

Small, and not much left of the ancient theatre, but the site is beautiful and evocative, and worth a visit.

“Built by the Romans in the 1st century BC.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

Though much of this is now in ruins, theatrical events are still held here and you can wander among fallen columns and carved marble. Step out onto the concert stage and imagine the past.
