“Just have a look at the Roman barge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2014

The Roman barge or "chalan" is such an amazing piece, it is the highlight of the museum. We went there just for it and we weren't disappointed. Otherwise, the region is rich of roman ruins and artifacts so the museum is only a concentration of what you can see elsewhere in Orange, Nimes...

“Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

More than you'd think you'd find in here! Plenty for a couple of hours or more. The museum is broken down into very helpful and interesting themes, such as, "medicine", "transportation", "daily life", etc. We loved it and will return!

“An absolute highlight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2013

The museum has an amazingly rich collection of Roman artifacts that are well presented in an ultra-modern building (already crumbling a bit - if the Romans had used such shoddy construction, nothing of their stuff would be left ...). Sculptures, sarcophagi, everyday utensils, and perhaps most impressively a boat recovered from the muddy bottom of the Rhône. Anyone with more than a passing interest in history should definitely visit.

“New aisle added”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2013

After discovering a 30m long Roman barge in the Rhône River, it was necessary for the museum to add a new aisle to the building. The restoration of the barge took a few years but it is now beautifully displayed in its new home. A herd of antique treasures are also shown in the new aisle of the building. They were part of the sunken barge.
After the Venus of Arles & the bust of Caesar (both copies since the originals are at the Louvre, in Paris), the Roman barge appears as the 3rd major treasure displayed in this museum. Really worth seeing.
As a reminder, Arles also has the second largest collection of sarcophagi in the world.

“English and French info at Exhibits!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2013

Exhibits were very interesting especially the antique roman mosaic floors. All exhibits had info in both French and English. Go outside to the garden to play some interesting Roman games and eat your picnic lunch!
