Les Clos Des Freres Gris doesn’t ooze style, that’d be too crass, rather it simply hints and suggests that you have, perhaps, booked into one of the finest places to stay in Aix. This is a tasteful and measured establishment and everything is just about perfect, whilst maintaining a relaxed and homely air – and that’s a pretty difficult trick to pull off. Les Clos and the grounds are kind of rustic continental but also spotlessly clean. The rooms are generously proportioned, sympathetically and tastefully decorated and accompanied by roomy ensuite facilities. I didn’t spot any nuclear power stations, but something serious must be firing the plumbing system in order to supply one of the most powerful and brilliant showers I think I’ve ever seen in a place of this size. Couple that with the L’Occitane shower gel and it takes some serious wafts from the breakfast kitchen to prevent you from wallowing in the shower all day!
The main thing here though is the way that proprietor Caroline looks after her guests. We had a reasonably awkward room request with a number of travellers arriving at different times, and from different countries. From first email contact through to checkout it was a flawless experience.
The reason I’ll return though is the extra touches which are unexpected, numerous and wonderful. That’s the real clincher and why I’m already trying to come up with an excuse to return!
