As a tourist exploring Provence, I'd say that a visit to La Cave d'Yves in Aix-en-Provence would be close to mandatory. Offering genuine french food in authentic environment, with exceptional service and a wide selection of hand-picked, top of the market french wines.
The owner, Yves, takes his time with every costumer, explaining different wines and what-goes-to-what depending on what you eat, which is very helpful for wine rookies such as myself. Besides from his native language, he also speaks fluent english AND swedish, which is rare in this region.
The food is simple but well made, giving a genuine taste of the french culture and at low price, around 10 euros per dish. Warm and cozy atmoshpere and treatment from the staff and regular costumers. The restaurant is small, decorated with wine-shelves and diplomas and there's also terrace outside.
If you're not too hungry, it's possible to sit at the bar and have a glass of wine together with a charcuterie platter, easily shared with friends or family.
