“Home away home in Aix-en-Provence”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2011

We recommend Maison de Carlotta for its convenient location
(2 minutes' walk from Cours Mirabeau), and cozy ambiance.
As many reviewers have already recognized, breakfast
served at the terrace or dining room is delicious.
Madame Aline, owner of this Maison, who is a real
"Cordon Bleu (excellent cook)", prepares home-made jam,
crepe or pancakes in addition to coffee, pastry, fresh orange
juice and fruit salad.

The only flaw is that there is no lift in the
building. (Maison de Carlotta is located in the 2nd and
the 3rd floor.) But, it's worth carrying your heavy
luggages. If you stay in this house, full of music
and hospitality, you could experience what the French
people call "la joie de vivre (joy of living)".

If you are nice, you may stay here. We want the wonderful owner Aline only to be treated kindly by her future guests. The beds are comfortable and firm. The house is immaculately clean. The breakfast is served in either of two lovely locations depending on the weather. It is a delicious french spread with breads and pastries, fruits and cheeses and drinks as you please. There are stairs to climb to get to your rooms, so pack accordingly. Aline takes care of the details. The bathrooms are lovely. The double windows keep all street side noise out, and the fans keep you cooled and you can also use the louvered shutters to the porch to allow airflow without unwanted noise. The house is on a side street only a short block to the main street. Aix-en-Provence is a lovely town with many fountains. Aline's home is the perfect location to visit the city. Everything is within walking distance. There are numerous cafes and off the lovely main road there are endless winding roads for shopping. We based in Aix-en-Provence at La Maison de Carlotta for four nights. The whole family was happy that this was our home away from home. We enjoyed the town and it was great to take day trips to surrounding beauty and explore Cassis and Marseille. La Maison de Carlotta est très merveilleuse.

Beautifully appointed old manor house type, very comfortable and spotlessly clean, a very hospitable and friendly lady host, it all made us feel very much at home.
Breakfast in the dining area off the kitchen or on the upper terrace shielded by blossoming jasmine was lavish and a real treat!

This place is just so charm and beautiful. It really feels like "home". Tastefully decorated, comfortable beds and pillows. Aline, the owner is an amazing host who will attend to your needs and requests with a lot of enthusiasm. She is friendly, gracious and energetic. She speaks english very well. Aline pays attention to every detail to make your stay so comfortable. The place is clean, the rooms are bright with nice sheets and very french decor. A private bathroom and large shower was located outside our bedroom. The owner provided robes. This place is located in a beautiful and quiet neighborhood and at walking distance to all the fabulous restaurants and shops. I went with my mother (83 years old) and even though there is no elevator to the apartment that was not a problem at all for us to enjoy our stay and do our daily sightseeing of Aix. Breakfast was very special, on a terrace with so many delicious treats and a variety of choices. We shared the table with other guests and it was very pleasant to chat to different people. Overall, I really recommend Maison Carlotta over any hotel. It will be make a difference in your trip. The place is very memorable and the owner a very special person. Can't wait to go back next year for another delightful stay at Maison Carlotta !!!!

I was pleasantly surprised by how central the location was and how cozy the B&B felt! The host Aline was very friendly and helpful. It felt so warm to have breakfast prepared for the host herself on the terrace. For those who want to stay in nice B&B in central Aix, I'd highly recommend Carlotta!

We feel so lucky to have discovered La Maison de Carlotta, where we spent four nights in May. The delightful rooms and charming owner were a great introduction to Provence.

The spacious two-storey apartment is at the top of one of the elegant old houses in the 17th/18th-century Mazarin quarter. It’s on a narrow side street just a few minutes’ walk from the Cours Mirabeau in the centre of Aix. This is the house where Cézanne’s wife, Hortense, is said to have lived in the 1890s after she fell out with the in-laws. The owner of La Maison de Carlotta, Aline D’Aquilante, has refurbished the apartment very stylishly – Farrow & Ball paint, linen curtains, terracotta floors, antique furniture – and it was featured in a French interior design magazine. Yet it is also homely, relaxed and inviting.

The three bedrooms are arranged around a pretty terrace, where guests can have breakfast or drinks. Two of the bedrooms have well-equipped en suite bathrooms, and the third has private use of a large bathroom just next door. The beds are very comfortable.

On the floor below are the living room, dining room and kitchen, where breakfast is served at the communal dining table. We enjoyed chatting to other guests and to Aline, who is very friendly and warm, and whose English is excellent. Our breakfasts were superb (she used to run a restaurant specializing in Provençal food), with a different cooked treat every day, plus freshly prepared fruit salad or strawberries with fromage blanc, freshly squeezed juice, goat’s cheese, muesli, yogurt, pastries, breads, homemade jam (try the fig).

Aline was very helpful in advising us on restaurants, excursions, the Aix festival, etc. She is incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the arts, and the apartment is filled with art, books and, downstairs, the sound of classical music and opera.

Aix is a beautiful and buzzy town, with a maze of medieval streets to explore. But what we enjoyed most was staying in Aline’s home. It was obvious that she takes a genuine interest in her guests, and she does everything she can to make their stay a happy one.

Excellent location for touring Aix en provence and surrounding areas. Aline is a sincere and helpful hostess suggesting daily itineraries throughout the Provence area which fulfilled our desire to seek out historic and picturesque areas to visit. Breakfasts were terrific with fresh juice, coffee, pastries, cheese, and fruit salads. We enjoyed warm conversation and Aline's special touches which made us feel welcome and comfortable. The accomodation is the epitome of french country with an elegant twist. Try lunch at Cafe du Paradou (located in Paradou - one hour outside Aix en province - Aline will make a reservation for you) - the meal was excellent(!) and you may just see one or two famous people in your midst.....
