“Aperitif cours mirabeau .. what else!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014

Whatever the day (winter or summertime) taking the aperitif cours mirabeau before dinner or lunch is a must. The resteaurant are tourist traps and I sugget to walk down streets around in order to find good surprises and better service.

“Place in Your Memory Trove”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2014

I'm using this attraction-name as a means of describing the community itself. Here is the heart of old Aix. Students milling, beautiful girls being breathtaking, roues doing what it is they feel compelled to do. A Sally Bowles looking madame at a sidewalk table puffing a thin, black cigar while gazing at people like us. Scooters buzzing of course, though not many because riders generally are impatient with the enforced leisure of the narrow pavement. And the wonderful, dappled shade of massive plane trees in the daytime, whose great trunks reflect multi-hued in the lengthening evening. An emotional experience, if you take time to soak it in.

Artists, do visit the Granat Museum; archaeologists, the ancient baths; lovers of humankind, revel in the animated open-air marketplaces. Try to stir your hand in as many fountains as you can find - every one of 'em. Not a place to tick off events as you might, say in Rome or Florence. (But for the faithful, St Sauveur's little fourth century, hole-in-the-floor baptistry is a remarkable reality check for Christians of every stripe).

We went twice, one in late Spring, once in early Autumn. A remarkable destination hopping along the coast by train, after the Cinque Terre and Ventimiglia, and before Avignon. Here's a video I made of our second visit; sorry on Tripadv it's cut'n'paste. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aTU2JjSAXk&list=TLs5AjXjHYw-WrO8tf_GrbI6m-0t1bi-GB. My guess is you'll need three nights at least. Not, again, so you can execute the busy-blog sort of time, so much as to set aside enough hours to relax into an excitingly gracious (oxymoron most other places) kind of experience.

“A delight - not to be missed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2014

The Cours Mirabeau is a must-see -- actually almost unavoidable if you are visiting Aix-en-Provence. Broad and lined with stately, arching plane trees, and elegant fountains, it delights all seasons of the year.

At Christmastime, the holiday fair lining the sidewalks is a shopper's heaven. Be sure to pick up some Santons de Noel, traditional provencal figurines. And calissons d'Aix,the exquisite diamond-shaped confection. But be sure to linger for a while at Le Grillon, a time-honored Aix cafe where you can gaze across the street at the caryatids holding up balconies on ancient Aix buildings.

“Gotta pass by here if you're in Aix.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014

And it's almost de rigeur to stop and have a drink or meal. Even though it's almost a scam, like many tourist areas it's still very beautiful and a lovely way to spend a couple of hours.

“Take it all in”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

We took a lovely stroll on this green, beautiful street. Stopped at Patiserrie Bechard for some pastries picnic and we had lunch on one of the restaurant's terrace. It was a good way to spend and afternoon; lunching and people watching.
