We just returned from a 12-day river cruise tour of Southern France.
Nice, on the French Riviera was at 72F a welcome respite from New York's 50s and 60s, gave us a chance to wear short pants and a taste of Italianate France monuments and food. Nice was nice!
A walking tour and then a brief bus ride got us to the ship (too elegant to be called a river boat), the Avalon Waterways MS Scenery, at Arles. After a walk around Arles, we proceed up the Rhone and Saone rivers to Avignon, Viviers, Vienne, Lyon, Macon and Beaune. Viewing medieval castles and pastoral farmland from the picture windows at breakfast, lunch, tea time, happy hour and dinner was just like in the ads, especially when the scenery was moving. Walking tours in the mornings and visits to local attractions in the afternoons helped to work off the inevitable calories and to broaden our cultural experience instead of our behnds!
All too soon, we got to Paris to top off our French experience with visits to the Eiffel Tower light show and the Arch of Triumph, the Moulin Rouge dinner show and just plain shopping. Excellent flea markets!
This Globus tour, aimed at a little upscale over 50s market, was not the cheapest, but gave us excellent dollar value with quality of food, beverages, guides, accomodations, pace and mix of included/optional tours. The Air France meals were better than Delta's.
