“A pleasant stay in a good location of town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

We stayed in this hotel only for one night, but it was a good experience.
The staff speaks well in English, and the rooms and the breakfast were very pleasing.
They offer a parking spot quite far from the hotel, but it wasn't a bother for us.
The location is very good, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants just outside, which could also be a downside but it wasn't- the sleep quality was great, even without shutting the windows (which we forgot by mistake).

Working in hotels in the UK, I am more than aware that most people are quick to write poor reviews and pick on the smallest of problems but very rarely review when they have a good or perfectly adequate experience and I think this hotel is being given a hard time. We have just spent one night and I have to admit, after reading reviews on here I wasn't really expecting it to be up to much but have to admit I was very pleasantly suprised! Yes, the rooms are small, but surely you visit these places to explore and see the area, not to sit in a hotel room, you can do that at home. They are clean, have TV's (if you really do want to waste your time with it), air-con and our bathroom was very nice & modern with a big shower. No, there isn't a lift and you do have to carry your bags up the stairs, however, the hotel don't hide this fact - they point it out on the website, I was aware of that before I even looked at the reviews, surely, if this is an issue you would book a different hotel in the first place? Yes, it is quite noisy and opposite a relatively busy bar but we opted for the 'if you can't beat them, join them' approach and sat enjoying a couple of beers, listening to the live music. The location is fantastic, we walked from the bus station then spent a couple of days mooching around town before again walking to the train station to move on, this was the perfect base. I would absolutely stay again without a doubt.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are the opposite side to the bars so might be a bit quieter

We stayed for 1 night and found the hotel very disappointing.
The room was really small, two of us with 2 bags couldn't quite move around the room! Also the bed and the bathroom were all below any standard or expectation.
No lift in the hotel, so we had to carry our bags up the stairs.
When arriving we contacted the reception to have indications but the staff was non-english speaking.
Rooms were all very noisy beacuse of the surrounding streets full of pubs with people singing and shouting basically all night.

Overall not a good stay and not reccomandable

I had been to that hotel years ago... It has been completely renovated and is now a member of a chain (I'm not fond of them)... At first, we thought the place looked rather cold and was overpriced... Only one hour after we arrived, the fire alarm went off and nobody seemed to bother (including other clients), which I found rather frightening... (No one seems to know what it means in France - I'm saying that being french myself and it drives me mad) We left the place for a while but things finally seemed to be all right. On the next morning, we really enjoyed the yummy buffet breakfast and the lady (manager?) was absolutely charming. The hotel also has lots of interesting books and magazines about the surroundings. Pity about the noisy location on Saturday evenings (busy pub accross the street) but our balcony (which my partner was allowed to use to smoke) was a treat. We'll come back!

We sayed 6 nights on av "Superior room". This is a less then basic "bed-and'breakfast-hotel"

####Positive:####
Clean.
Free WiFi
Nice bathroom with hairdryer.
Air/con

####Negative:####
Room very, very small.
Open, ugly, rack for storage of clothes.
Much noice from other room and stairways.

####Big neagtive - this shall be a superior room:####
Safetybox is visible on the floor, and not secured in any way. Easy to steal the box.
No water-heater in room for make coffee/tea.
No frigde (BIG BIG BIG MISS)
No free water in room.

Do NOT carry much luggage at this hotel.

The front desk is hidden behind a glass-window, and look like a "hour-rate-hotel".
Staff at front-desk not nice and seems to not like the work.
No "Welcome to us" - and we did not fell welcome in any way.
Front desk closed at night, and we feel security very low.

Highly overpriced, boring, standard continental breakfast. You have to order the breakfast thje day before.
They charge 7€. We had much better hotel-breakfasts in Paris for half the price.

Location is great, but overall, the most hotels in town has good location.

We will not stay again, and we can not recomend this hotel.

Nice looking picture of hotel on its website attracted us, but have to say it doesn't live up to first expectations. Location of hotel is good and within walking distance of the old port and all there is to see there. However, rooms are pretty basic and rather small, although bed was comfortable and room clean. Air con in the room worked fine, which was good considering the temperatures were fairly warm, although it was quite noisy. Bathroom was small but adequate, although the shower was very small and had mould around the edges of the shower tray (yuk), and there was nothing to attach the shower head to, so you had to hold it in your hand to shower/wash hair. Parking for the car was in a public car park about 5 minutes drive from the hotel, which was OK (given the central location of the hotel it could forgiven for not having on site parking). Staff friendly enough, in particular the guy on at night who made us coffees and teas at 11pm and let us take table and chairs out into the paved area at the side of the hotel, when we couldn't find anywhere else nearby that was open/would serve us. All in all, it was adequate enough for the 2 nights we spent there, and La Rochelle itself made up for it....great atmosphere and lively in the old port area in the evenings.

collecting the car to leave!

Very nice location for this hotel, very near the nice harbor of the city. The staff is very helpful and the hotel is very clean. What is really fantastic over there is de bike storage. A place especially foreseen for the bikes and that s been proposed by de desk when we did the reservation. Nothing is more difficult than taking your bikes and having to leave then on de car. It's not a luxury hotel and that's the reason that it’s not to expensive. The rooms not small not big just ok but the bathroom tiny. And it was more or less noisy in the morning. Also breakfast was correct. Anyhow, the little things that were disturbing were completely forgotten by the kindliness of the staff. A nice stay in a nice location.

  • Liked — location and friendlyness of the staff
  • Disliked — small bathroom
