“Not a 5 stars hotel but quite nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013 via mobile

We stayed in the suite 34 in the "hotel 5 stars" building (the old one).

I will start the negative points if you don't mind.
It has nothing of a 5 stars hotel standards.
No air conditioning, 1 velux in our bedroom but it has been closed with screws as the window was apparently broken.
In the children room, 1 of the 2 velux window was not closing properly.. Quite noisy in the night.
We asked for a baby bed. But we never received any mattress. In the end we took the one we had in our car.
Painting on the wall would need some refresh.
Not book neither in the Room to explain the rules, give some indication nor giving details about the room service options.
6long chairs around the swimming pool for a bit less than 60 bedrooms seems strange!
You are suppose to be in the 5 starts part (and you pay for it) but you have nothing more nor included in the price than the one staying in the studios. Small swimming pool is for everybody, you have to pay your parking place, your breakfast..
What's the point?

But we loved the shared spaces as the lobby and the room with the piano. Really simple and beautiful decoration.
The situation in the market area is really nice and the persons working at the reception and the bar are friendly!

As conclusion I would say that you shouldn't expect a 5 stars service but that the place is nice. Maybe better to pay less and to stay in the residence part. I would recommend it to friends on that way.

After doing a fair bit of searching through trip advisor we decided on the Residence (old building) as it was one of only two hotels we could see with a pool. I take my hat off to the photographer, as when we spotted the "plunge pool" upon arrival, we couldn't believe quite how small it was.....but it does the trick after a hot walk around this pretty town, just don't expect to do any swimming in it. The building itself is about 10 minutes walk from the port so is ideally located and is very nice with large cool reception and a very large piano lounge located further back. We never saw anybody in it other than the bar staff. Its an old building with a tiny lift and no air conditioning in the room, however we were supplied with a remote control stand up fan which did its best to subdue the stifling heat in our room. The room itself although pleasant was tired and does not reflect the prices charged by this establishment. You even had to hold the shower attachment as it didn't locate onto the wall, result, water everywhere..... The taps were loose in the separate loo. Just a slight question.....why have a bidet in a different room to the toilet?
The turn down service was nice but I would rather have air conditioning. The maid always left us a present after cleaning the room.....one day it was an old pillow case, the next day it was her bottle of polish left on the shelf....quite amusing but probably not the done thing.
The town itself is vibrant and comes to life in the evening along the harbour front, the only thing I would say is it seems to have become a bit of a haven for some down and outs with dogs and whilst they don't seem to present a problem other than watching them cracking open cans at 9.0am their dogs seem to leave a lot of mess all over the place and the local authorities don't seem to be on top of this, so be careful where you step!
There is wonderful seafood all around the area and when having Oysters for the second day in a row I asked where they came from and the waiter pointed out the window at the row upon row of baskets stretching out into the Atlantic, they don't come much fresher.
My conclusion, a nice place that could do a bit better with a little re-investment

Right in the town centre with above average friendliness for the French, room was nice and clean and we paid for a suite.

Generally I would recommend a hotel like this and probably still would, however....

NO SHOWER AND NO AIR CONDITIONING IS UNACCEPTABLE.

Stayed here for our 4 day stay in La Rochelle. Postion is great for the town centre & all the wonderful restaurants within easy walking distance. Breakfast was not included, & at 15 € not cheap, but go hungry & there is plenty to help yourself too!
Our room was ok, comfortable & clean. This is a boutique hotel, so not like the hotel chains at all. Well worth a look, if for the location or peace & quiet available here.

We found this to be a pleasant hotel located 5 minutes walk away from La Rochelle harbour. staff were extremely accommodating and informative. They arranged a private parking space for our car, which wouldnt fit in the small underground car park. Information was given about local activities and transport. It was a spacious hotel and our room had a kitchennete was reasonably well equipped and included a filter coffee machine! Only drawback was that there wasnt a safe in the room, however staff did keep our valuables safe on request.

Room Tip: Our room had a kitchenette which was very useful.

We stayed here four nights and very much liked the spacious, clean-lined and bright appearance and decor not only of our two-room apartment, but also the hotel in general. Reception staff very pleasant and helpful. The rooms,in truth, need a little bit of tidying up here and there (a bit of flaking paint etc), but still felt clean and well maintained. Kitchenette was very tiny though - inside a cupboard. Very quiet area - actually quite difficult to find!, as it's in the old town about 20 mins walk from picturesque harbour area, down a little road with lovely old arches. This is where La Rochelle's real life is, restaurants etc ... so if you want to be in the middle of it all, this hotel may not suit??

Room Tip: Don't know if any of the rooms have larger kitchenettes? If you plan to do anything other than b...

We stayed here for five nights and were a last minute booking after the hotel we had chosen in a neighbouring region was actually closed when we turned up! We found this hotel in a Chateux et Hotels guide and they were very pleased to accommodate us last minute, late at night, with the minimum of fuss. We were given an attic-type room which had two levels with the bathroom and a kind of second bedroom/dressing room upstairs, which was lovely. Very spacious and quite luxurious in the older-fashioned French way. Being right in the centre ville, we found this hotel to be perfect. The breakfasts were good although quite expensive (as they always are when not included in your rate), so ate at local cafes most of the time. We would definitely return here when next in La Rochelle.
