“The best hotel I'm Cognac, but that's not saying much.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2013 via mobile

This is the best hotel in Cognac. However, comparing it to other world class hotels, it leaves something to bd desired. The service, while friendly, is really not adequate. There is one person at the reception that basically does everything. He or she is often gone because they are attending to other things. If the person at the front desk is gone, be ready to handle your own bags. The rooms are nice, but everything else needs work. Oh yeah, one towel per room, if you want more, ask every day. Really ?

We had 2 lovely days at this hotel in May 2013.
The staff were the most dedictaed and helpful we found in France.
Nothing was an effort for any of them.
They offered information and tourist advise for all attractions in Cognac.
The hotel room was excellent, super clean and comfortable.
They would book cafes or restuarants, plus attractions.

Beautiful hotel in central location
The rooms we had were tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean
Even though the hotel is by the road there is no road noise due to the windows.
The staff were helpful and friendly and we will return there without hesitation

3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

I was surprised when upon hotel check-in, no-one offered any assistance at all with taking my luggage to my room. Particularly when I was obviously struggling to get it into the lift whilst simultaneously trying to keep the lift doors open - all this right in front of the person who remained steadfastly seated at the front desk.
Good things though were that my room (number 26) was spacious, light, and had a terrific view over the town square. The bed was fabulously comfortable with plenty of pillows. It was sparkling clean, had plenty of amenities and a great shower. It had plenty of power points for charging my phone, computer etc and the wifi worked perfectly well.
Not so good was that there was a kettle but no mini-bar and, perhaps because I booked as a single guest, there was only one tea bag, and one coffee satchel with one tiny serve of coffee cream - meaning I had to choose between a cup of tea when I arrived, or a cup of coffee the next morning. It seemed a little stingy and I don't think did justice to the hotel.
Breakfast though was good and included: fruit; yogurt; croissants and toast with various spreads; prosciutto, ham, and a range of cheeses including a beautiful white camembert; plus a selection of juices and coffee that was not bad at all.
I stayed for two days, one of which was a Sunday, during which time the spa services were not offered.
Beware of leaving the hotel without the code to punch in at the front door should it be necessary. I was left in the street for some time wondering how to get back into the hotel when I returned around lunch time after being out on the Sunday morning. Ultimately I asked someone at the cafe next door to help by calling the hotel proprietors.
There are a number of cafes surrounding the square. The Globe Brasserie is probably the best of them.
Overall, the hotel and location were great, but the service a bit lacking.

A lovely, boutique hotel that IS the town center! Good coffee and a more than reasonable french breakfast. It is next door to bars and cafes, opposite to the walking street. I am not sure if Cognac ever gets crowded and if the traffic is ever a bother here. I was there on work and easily walked to most of my appointments. There are few good restaurants in few minutes of walking, Le Bistro De Claude being one such. The town market (lovely oysters in season) and the Cognactheque shoppe are highlights of this town besides the numerous Cognac Houses that are in walking distance from the hotel. The hotel has a 24 x 7 reception and that's the only staff you are likely to bump into other than the town's only real barman. I hope I can stay here again!

We came across this hotel on the web purely by chance. The reviews of the hotel were all fantastic and accurate. Great location, excellent staff, good size, clean rooms and a surprice to find a small, but great indoor swimming pool. The staff helped us organise our trips to a couple of cognac houses and recoemmended a couple of nice restaurants nearby. The bar has a good selection of cognac which made a great nightcap on our return to the hotel amd again, the staff were only too keen to help us m ake the right selections. We are looking forward to returning to the Francois 1er in 2013 and beyond!
