“Wonderful staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

This hotel was lovely, simple but clean and well located. The best thing though was the receptionist Mattieu. He was really helpful and friendly and truly made this hotel a great place to say. If Mattieu is not a part owner of the hotel I hope he is well paid as he really set the tone and made our stay in Laon great.

This is a lovely small hotel, very handy for the magnificent (but little known) cathedral. The young proprietor could not have been more helpful - even to finding us a parking place and helping carry our bags in teeming rain. The hotel is a listed historic building which has been sympathetically restored. Laon itself is a most interesting small city, with some good restaurants near the hotel, but the real gem in Laon is the cathedral - the only gothic building I know of which has 16 stone oxen gazing out from the top of its towers!

The first thing to say is just what a find Laon is - this is more than just a stopover (but that is what we used it for). We could not have asked for a more helpful manager - friendly and nothing too much trouble. The hotel has (nearly) been completely renovated so we could see what some parts must have been like - old comments on this should be ignored. The renovation has been done very tastefully. We had a family room which was small but fine. The ONLY small criticism was that the beds were not very comfortable but overall we highly recommend this

From our arrival, Matthew was a perfect host- he went out to the car to check on where we parked. He then took in and stored our skiis for the evening. He recommended a restaurant for us and then helped the children with the free wifi codes. We had a Quadruple room on the 2nd floor (room 9).Room was lovely, boutique style with 2 double beds and a lovely shower room. It was perfect for our stopover, we had been skiing to Les Deux Alpes and were on way back to Calais. Laon was a cathedral town, very quaint. Continental breakfast was 6Euros, lovely and fresh croissants and rolls with jam and marmalade or cheese. Orange Juice and unlimited tea, coffee or hot chocolate. We have stayed in many 4* hotels which have not been as good, cant believe this was a 2*.

A brighter, more helpful proprietor one could not hope to find. We were made to feel welcome from the first phonecall I made to ask about parking. The hotelier was ever so sweet with the children and they loved being at Hotel les Chevaliers. We had a room full of character, modernised in its antiquity, for the 4 of us. Laon was a wonderful place to be and the cathedral was fascinating. If I could give more stars for service I would.

LAON is a perfect stopover if you don't want to kill yourself rusing for the Calai ferries - and incur a hefty speeding fine in the process. We knew Laon but hadn't stayed in this hotel the last time. The entrance was as hotels used to be 30 years ago, but the young owner gave us the room on the second floor which he had just renovated. From the colour scheme to the bathroom, everything was well thought out, not flashy but modern and fresh, and a lot of love had gone into details. Fabulous views from the window over the ramparts and the vast countryside. He was working on the third floor and I'm looking forward to the rest of the hotel to look like this soon. He obviously inherited a very dated place, so the first floor is not yet there. The breakfast which we took in our room was enough to feed us for the day - lovely.

At night we dined at the Bannière de France nearby where we had stayed in more expensive rooms before. The dinner was copious very well presented and prepared, even though we ate from the menu du jour.

In the last twenty years Laon seems to have had a very hard time. There is much property for sale - anyone tempted to buy, I was told by the locals, she heed this warning - any owmer is also responsible for what happens in the rocks and the three levels of cellars dug into it - and the rocks are apparently in a poor state. This town, more than any I have visited recently, would fully deserve to have a large injection of money in order to halt the deterioration. It was the seat of the French king in the 14th century, so it is very deserving. So - Europe cultural heritage bankers, get your purse out.

WATCH OUT THOUGH Directly opposite the fabulous cathedral portal is a café by the name of BRASSERIE du PARVIS. We simply wanted a slice of apple cake and a coffee and they charged us over £15, because they had put a dollop of ice cream with the cake. Outrageous and exploitative. True the view is worth something, but not this exorbitant price.

Room Tip: At the moment ask for the room to the back on the 2nd floor
