“Not flashy, I thought this type of hotel didn't exist anymore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

LAON is a perfect stopover if you don't want to kill yourself rusing for the Calai ferries - and incur a hefty speeding fine in the process. We knew Laon but hadn't stayed in this hotel the last time. The entrance was as hotels used to be 30 years ago, but the young owner gave us the room on the second floor which he had just renovated. From the colour scheme to the bathroom, everything was well thought out, not flashy but modern and fresh, and a lot of love had gone into details. Fabulous views from the window over the ramparts and the vast countryside. He was working on the third floor and I'm looking forward to the rest of the hotel to look like this soon. He obviously inherited a very dated place, so the first floor is not yet there. The breakfast which we took in our room was enough to feed us for the day - lovely.

At night we dined at the Bannière de France nearby where we had stayed in more expensive rooms before. The dinner was copious very well presented and prepared, even though we ate from the menu du jour.

In the last twenty years Laon seems to have had a very hard time. There is much property for sale - anyone tempted to buy, I was told by the locals, she heed this warning - any owmer is also responsible for what happens in the rocks and the three levels of cellars dug into it - and the rocks are apparently in a poor state. This town, more than any I have visited recently, would fully deserve to have a large injection of money in order to halt the deterioration. It was the seat of the French king in the 14th century, so it is very deserving. So - Europe cultural heritage bankers, get your purse out.

WATCH OUT THOUGH Directly opposite the fabulous cathedral portal is a café by the name of BRASSERIE du PARVIS. We simply wanted a slice of apple cake and a coffee and they charged us over £15, because they had put a dollop of ice cream with the cake. Outrageous and exploitative. True the view is worth something, but not this exorbitant price.

Room Tip: At the moment ask for the room to the back on the 2nd floor

What we booked was an appartment for 4 with two seperate bedrooms, what we got was one single room with two double beds.   It looked more like a school dormitory than an hotelroom, no privacy at all.  True the hotel is under renovation (partly paid with money from the European Union), still it is only half finished and the work is sloppy to say the least.  If possible, look elswhere for accomodation !

Arrived in the centre of the old town of Laon in the bitter February cold and stumbled on this delightful hotel. The hotelier-Matthieu was exceptionally welcoming, helpful and sensitive to our needs. Our double room had been recently renovated with great simple taste, was totally silent, had magnificent views from the ramparts and was so cosy that we decided to extend our stay and negotiated a fair price for two nights-with generous breakfasts included. We are now hoping to go back as soon as possible to explore this amazingly historic town-obviously 'Hotel les Chevaliers' will be our choice of hotel without question. Please don't be put off by the rahter dark entrance or grubby staircarpet-this is a traditional French resting place to be savoured.

Room Tip: The recently renovated rooms at the back of the hotel-you would not think you were in a town!!

Les Chevaliers only has 2 stars so we didn't expect much. Located in an old building, it is typical of the old style, family run French hotel with worn carpets and dowdy decoration. It lacks a feeling of care. But the bedroom was large with a high ceiling and decent sized, separate, bathroom.
The problem is that some of the rooms (ours included - number 2) face the street which is one-way and seems to have vehicles, sometimes going fast, for most of the night. We hardly slept with the noise of drunken kids and rubbish carts.
57 Euros for the 2 of us thus seemed a bit pricey. The breakfast (extra 10 Euros each) was bread, croissant and jam with orange juice and coffee / tea - no yoghurt or musli. Probably better to use a nearby cafe instead.
Laon is a good stop-off from Calais and a lovely town to walk round with a stunning cathedral, but one of the other couple of hotels in the old town is probably a better bet - or at least make sure your room is not on the street!

We were guided by our satnav to this hotel - 238 metres from the centre of the town! it's simple but welcoming with a hearty french breakfast in the morning. The hotel was literally a stone's throw from the main square, and 2 minutes walk from the Cathedral where they hold a light show on Friday's and Saturday's in the summer. Laon is a beautiful little hill top town, and rather than rushing past on the Autoroute we would recommend stopping off and staying at this little place.
