“Not an outstanding dinner...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2011

We booked at this restaurant after reading the many glowing reviews..and were a bit disappointed!
what happened??

We sat in the "cave" downstairs, which was highly recommend, and were not amused by the musty
mildew scents down there...oh well, it looked nice.

I ordered the aiguilettes of Canard, which should be very tender and flavorful, but they were tough, full of sinews, no herbs or spices, and quite disappointing....with a brown gravy of no discernible taste.

My husband had the Emince of beef, the specialty of the house topped with foie gras, which was very strangely sliced in thin slices and stacked like the Kebob places, again with a brown gravy...only the foie gras was tasty!!

Our client had the entire magret de canard, which looked good, again with a brown gravy and no
rosemary or spices.

The plates were served with "legumes" which consisted of a curious trio of potatoes....whipped potatoes,
a disc of potatoes under the meats, and a stuffed small potato....not a green or colored legume in sight.
The only potatoes that were good were the whipped variety....so strange....

And so, we were very disappointed after all of the reviews...hope the next person to review has a much
better and a better tasting at this restaurant...or perhaps it was the "good chef's" night off?????

“Deservedly the No.1 restaurant in Le Mans”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2011

We turned up at the right time as the restaurant opened and got a table in the atmospheric basement.20 mins later they were turning people away.
The rilletes were gorgeous and so was the salad with pate.
The main was a tournedos steak with an amazing potato dish that had mushrooms pureed and possibly celeriac.
Great service and the house wine was very good too.
Right in the heart of the medieval part of Le Mans it was a great starting point for the walk around the Nuits de Chimeres.
Try to book if you can as always busy even though they have 3 floors

“Really good food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2011

Really good food and so welcome after the long drive from North of London. Excellent service. Charming place. Choose the basement for maximum charm or the other floors for better air-conditioning on a hot Summer evening.

“it deserves this place #1”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2011

Regarding to the reputation of the restaurant over TripAdvisor, I made a reservation and ate my first dinner there. Yes I was right the food was delicious as well as the glass of red wine they offered me and the dessert also. I ate duck, it was cooked in a "cocotte" and it was laid over a potato puree but there was something inside the puree that made it sooo different from the others. Was it chopped mushrooms, some sort of cheese? i don't know. The duck was cooked right the way it should be, no skin no unidentified soft parts, just delicious! I drank a glass of red wine, unfortunately I do not remember the name of it. And the dessert was a choice of the waiter, it was written something like chocolate cake in the menu but it was more like a sufflet.
And also, compared to Paris the prices are extremely reasonable.
Reservation is a MUST..!

“Acute disappointment not being able to book in.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2011

After travelling 17.000 kms we were extremely disappointed to find the restaurant full on the night we visited Le Mans. No way to reserve a table no phone bookings and were told that they were full for the whole night. As we were only in the town for one night it was a no go.
I suggest that you book for the next few nights if you can't get in on the night you arrive
What a shame it sounds wonderful!!!!
