“A Little Known Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is a small "fairy tale" castle. Moats, half-timbering, checkerboard tile - all lend to its 15th-16th century charm. Off the beaten track but worth seeking out if you have the time. Guided tour in French only, there were only 4 total on tour. This site is run by the museum in Lisieux. The guardroom has some old frescoes and the rest has been fully furnished in different period styles. Hard to find out info online, see best website below. Unfortunately no guidebook only a small selection of postcards. There is a restaurant just across the moat ("Salon de The - Creperie") that is excellent. It is run by a very nice young couple and is a charming place for lunch.

“Worth seeking out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

This small Chateau is tucked away amid rolling hills just outside Lisieux - it has small but delightful gardens with peacocks grazing, swans swimming and a short walk around the side of the moat.

There are guided tours of this home that take less than an hour and you feel like you are transported into the family life of the artists that once lived there. It's not your usual Chateau but one which is well worth a visit.
Unfortunately the tea rooms next door were closed when we arrived, as it would have been nice to sit in the country and enjoy the solitude and peace that this area to offer.

Outside, the small village church is under renovation but still adds to the charm of this romantic haven.

“In the Basse-Normandy area a medeival Chateaux”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

A quaint old-world charming place hidden in a out-of -the-beaten track small lane amid farmlands opposite a forgotten old church we found an architectural treasure - the Chateau de Saint Germain-de-Livet. The Chateau has a unique checher-board appearance of glazed tiles on its brick strface as well as an attached timbered manor. The moat around it is a haven of peace where swans glide about & peacocks roam its vast expansive gardens. Charming! A place time has forgotten.
