“Long weekend escape”

We wanted a convenient location in order to site see to Rouen, Mont Saint Michel and Bayeux. Caen is not the prettiest town but is a very convenient base. Plenty of coffee shops and places for dinner, however the quality varied.
The Ibis is very clean and tidy with very helpful receptionists. The room was compact but clean, tidy and quiet. We both slept very well :0)
We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant, except to grab a coffee on the last morning.... I would recommend going to one of the many coffee shops in the town to get your coffee fix!

The smallest room I have ever stayed in. The reception insisted it was the same as all the others but it was not. It is the size you would get in a caravan.
O/k for an overnight but we were there for six days, had to hang clothes in the bathroom.
I thing accor should make it clear the hotel is only suitable for an overnight.

We have stayed at this hotel before (October 2012) and it was brilliant, the room was great, the service very helpful, breakfast was enjoyable and we were very pleased with the experience.
So when we returned this time we expected the same sort of experience, sadly this was not to be!

The hotel is centrally located close to the central bus and SNCF Train station (15min walk). It is very easy to find and has several nearby restaurants, bars and shops.

We arrived late evening and the receptionist was checking in someone else so called the reception manager who checked us in, she was very efficient and pleasant and explained everything to us in perfect English.

IT WENT DOWNHILL FROM THERE!!!! We followed the directions given to our room (109) and found we had been checked into a double room.
We returned to reception and the reception manager had gone but the receptionist was there, we explained we would like twin rooms if possible as we are 2 men and did not really want to share a bed, she screwed up her face and tapped at her computer for ages before saying we should have requested it or else it is always a double room (this was not the case at St Malo the previous night) and she went on to say that there was nothing she could do so we would have to stay in the double room. Reluctantly we returned to the room only to find the double bed was actually 2 single beds pushed together and covered with a double sheet and duvet. Surely it would not have taken much to separate them and put single sheets and duvets on them for us (or even given us the bedding and we would have done it ourselves).
On our way out to dinner we stopped at reception and asked if she could contact our next hotel in Rouen and request a twin room for us, she did this but it seemed to really inconvenience her.

The hotel itself is typical of the Ibis Brand in France and the decor is minimalist but everything is clean and easy to find.

Breakfast is the standard Ibis continental buffet served in the Courtepaille restaurant attached to the hotel, you are given a little card to present at breakfast.

The receptionist in the morning (a different one) was very pleasant and check-out was quick and easy.

Room Tip: If you want a twin room request it in advance. try to get a room at the back of the hotel as these...

For Americans reading this, the Ibis Caen Centre is the Holiday Inn Express of France. It is clean, well-run, and consistent. Nothing special, but you will not receive any negative surprises. The location is great because it is near the harbor, several good restaurants, and within walking distance (if you are used to walking) of both the train and bus stations. I would have no reservations about staying here again.

Very helpful staff, particularly the receptionist who organised twin beds for us. Hotel was very central to where we wanted to be. Rooms were very small, no kettle to make tea etc, which would have been good. Otherwise, no problems at all

This Ibis is well situated near to the town centre. Parking (underground €10 per night) is useful because the side streets tend to be full. Good location for touring the landing beaches. We've stayed before and both times the service lacks the normal Ibis level. We were made to feel almost a nuisance in the bar, with the bar staff more interested in closing asap. Breakfast service was fine. A short walk gives plenty of choice of restaurants.
