“Like a punch in the gut”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

Wasn't expecting to come away so haunted but this museum really tells it like it is. The area on the holocaust and the clearing of Jews from communities in Poland and Russia was graphic and powerful and demonstrated what war is really like.

As I walked through I realized why my grandfathers would never talk about the War. One served in Europe, the other the Pacific.

Very good backgrounder/Refresher on WW2/Normandy for prior to a tour if you've got one scheduled. But mind the little ones because you have to walk through areas with massive photos of death and dismemberment once you start.

Sombering and real. Glad I went, and now I understand a little more why my grandfathers never wanted to talk about the war.

“Do not miss this...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

This is an exceptional and very moving exhibition. I would recommend the day tour. See the memorial in the morning which takes three to four hours and then the minibus to the beaches and cemetery in the afternoon. It will make a fantastic day and put everything into context. It is not a major physical exercise either. Ask at your hotel about the tour as we got a double discount voucher saving €34.. the day cost about €120 for the two of us and it was very special.

“Great multimedia center”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

This is a grand site, it will take you min 2 hours to walk through. It covers the period of the 20th century, not just WW2.
Take the audio guide and do it on your own pace. If you are travelling with a group, just agree on the departure time and do your own thing.
Great site!

“Over priced”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

Don't expect a museum connected with the D-Day landings. It's a "peace" museum and very confusing layout and exhibits. Entry is vastly over priced.

“Excellent presentation of World Wars I and II”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2012

This was my second visit to the Memorial, and I found it just as moving the second time. This is not a hardware museum, so those looking for lots of weapons, tanks, and planes would be best served elsewhere. However, the Memorial excells at giving a you-are-there (brief) presentation of WWI and then depicting and explaining how the terms of the peace agreements and the economic and political conditions of the time led inexorably to WWII. The design of the exhibits flow through time made the events come alive for me, and the bravery and suffering of the people involved were real enough to feel. I had tears streaming down my face long before D-Day. I saw many other people have the same reaction. Overall, as non-personal events go, the Memorial is one of the most moving experiences I've had, and is a perfect introduction to a visit to other D-Day sites. Also, there are beautiful gardens outside that are very worth a visit, the British garden in particular. The only reason I didn't give the site a 5-star rating was the restaurant. I don't expect much from food at a tourist attraction, but their food managed to fall short anyway. Inedible fish.
