“Great location if travelling by train”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2014

Clean rooms and super friendly staff. Bar and restaurant on the main floor. Tasty and reasonable price. Within walking distance of the main tourist area. Parking is on the street. Not always easy to find. Rooms are average. Basic. No phone or haidryer. Would stay here again

We spent one night here following a ferry crossing from Poole to Cherbourg and then the train to Caen enroute to Rouen and Giverney. The location was excellent, directly across the road from the railway station and the staff were all very helpful. The bedroom, although quite small, was very clean and quiet and breakfast was very good. It was possible to easily visit the center of the town as the trams and buses are directly outside the station.

We did not spend the night here, but had an excellent breakfast. The service was outstanding and very friendly. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. The coffee outstanding and the omelettes we had, were very tasty. I will go back for the croissants!

Worried a bit about location as usually stay in Bayeux but was very pleasantly surprised by the hotel. With my daughter and son-in-law. So clean and everything we could need from a basic hotel. Walking one way in the evening district seemed a bit seedy but just on other side of the station was a modern shopping area and numerous restaurants..

Staff and owner very friendly and helpful. Enjoyed the breakfast and lovely to arrive back in the evening from travelling around to enjoy a beer outside the hotel.

Room Tip: Barking dog at back but quiet at night.

Spent 4 nights here with friends 5-9th June for D-Day celebrations. Staff couldn't have been more helpful, kind and friendly. Directly opposite Caen train station but didn't hear a thing, Rooms a bit small but so VERY VERY CLEAN. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel and would stay here again. WELL DONE BOY'S, and thanks for the bottle of wine on our departure, will think of you as we drink it.

Perfect location across the road from the train station worked great for D-Day beaches tour. Nice basic breakfast. English spoken at reception. My train from Paris was severely delayed, so I emailed the reception and they waited for me after 10 pm to check-in. Room just like you see in the pictures, clean, recently refurbished excellent condition. Definitely good value for the money as per European standards. Wifi signal was weak in some areas.

Hotel La Consigne - Caen

My wife and I and my Brother stayed at La Consigne in April of 2014. This hotel is in a great location across from the train station and town rail/bus stop. We were greeted by Regis who is friendly and energetic. We are not good at speaking French and he was trying his best to speak english. What we lacked in communication, Regis more than made up for in his friendly charm. In the week that we stayed we got to know both Regis and Jonathan. Both young men were very helpful and even packed lunches for us for. The food at La Consigne was good and the restrooms were clean. Our rooms were what we expected for the price range. The Town of Caen is rich in history (Including William The Conqueror’s Tomb) and should be on your list of places to visit in the Normandy area. Be sure to visit the tourist bureau that is across from Saint Pierre Church by the ATM (also handy). If you use this town as a base to see the beaches at Normandy we advise you to go to the next train stop at Bayeux (about a 20 minute train trip from Caen) there you can catch a bus to the gold beach. You can book excursions including Mount Saint Michelle from the Tourist Bureau. We left Hotel La Consigne feeling like we had made new friends in Regis and Jonathan. We greatly enjoyed our stay at La Consigne and the Caen area.

Room Tip: If you simply ask Jonathan or Regis they will do what they can to help you. These two are great hos...
