“History Is All Over This Place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

Being history enthusiasts, this was a fun place to stay. Enjoyed all the autographed photos of a wide variety of "celebrities." This is not a hotel to stay in if you are at all physically challenged. We had a room on the third floor. The gentleman who checked us in carried our heavy luggage up to our room. It is quite a hike up the stairs. I thought that was pretty nice. We had a view of the front courtyard and extra music from a very verbal pigeon. The room was nicely furnished. Internet service was excellent. The staff were able to converse well in English. Parking was challenging. It was easiest to wait until other guests with cars parked precariously close left. The breakfast was highly overpriced. Food is easily obtained from vendors along the main street. The Bayeux tapestry and the cathedral are within walking distance. We loved Bayeux as it was quite small and driving was not a problem.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on a lower floor. Carrying luggage up and down is taxing.

This hotel had been recommended to us as "a romantic old hotel". Yes, the location in Bayeux is excellent, and the staff is friendly. Our tiny room, so small that only an old-fashioned classic double bed would fit in, was not romantic. Nor was the threadbare (literally!) carpet on the stairs, and the 2 wooden chairs with sagging cane seats in our tiny room -- we spent our days staying out as long as possible to avoid coming back to that room. Our trip took us through 3 countries and we by no means stayed in grand hotels, yet this was the only hotel which lacked a room safe, a coffee maker in the room, and screens on the windows. It was also the only hotel where breakfast was not included in the room rate. It must have been a nice place at one time.

The Lion d' Or is a hotel that rests on its laurels,I think. Many famous people have stayed here over the years and the hotel likes to tout this. Although the public rooms are well appointed and charming, the hallways, guest rooms, and bathrooms are dismal. One disconcerting feature was lack of illumination in the hallways even at night. In addition, there is no elevator. The hotel is located on a main street so it is within walking distance of all sights in this charming town. The hotel is very pleasant.

An older building with character. Clean and well presented. Lovely place close to centre of Bayeux. Friendly staff. Good dining room. Excellent evening meal, well worth that bit extra. Continental breakfast. Restricted parking, best to book at 9€ per night. Would visit again

Room Tip: Away from traffic but as its an old building guests need to be aware that noise can travel. Not a pr...

Stayed for one night at the Lion d'Or whilst on a driving holiday in Normandy and Brittany. The hotel is ok for the money we paid. As other reviews have stated it is in need of a little TLC here and there and the massive stain on the green fabric wall as you climb the stairs does nothing for the ambience Of he place. This should be repaired as a priority.....!
Otherwise the hotel is good, The room was on the small side but more than adequate. The bed was comfortable and clean and serviced to a good standard. The bathroom was clean, spacious and suited our needs. Parking is 9€ but this is usual in France so not a problem.
All in all I would use the hotel again if I was visiting Bayeux... Which is unlikely as all there is to see here is the Tapestry..!

Wonderful room, staff, location. Biggest and best...and least expensive...room we had in France...three nights here...not enough! Pretty, clean, bidet, and separate bath (and shower)...view was delightful..nothing more we seniors could have asked for...a definite "will do again". And then you get the lovely town and area explore, normandy tours...hey Ike liked it and so did we!

I've just had a family holiday in Normandy staying at the Lion D'Or. The choice of dishes at dinner is extensive and all the ones we sampled were superb. The salt marsh lamb was out of this world.. Having pre dinner drinks and coffee in a lounge surrounded by photos of the great and good who have stayed there was amazing.Rooms are comfortable, the staff are friendly and helpful, a great palce to stay.
