“This is an iconic hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

A very attractive old coaching hotel that has been welcoming travellers for centuries, and yet it is more.It is completely French but a part of world history. It has a down to earth elegance and faded glamour.Bayeux was the first town in France to be liberated during the second World War and everybody who was anybody stayed at the Lion D'Or and loved it. Lauren Bacall, Kennedys, Eisenhower and Tom Hanks to name a few. Our suite was 3rd floor (no lift- That is VERY good exercise) slightly tatty round the edges but clean and comfortable.
Service, when it comes, is efficient and friendly. You may have to wait 10 minutes for your gin and tonic, but when it comes it is huge , and what is 10 minutes in rhe scale of world history.
The restaurant will not set the world on fire, but good enough.
Can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: It is a relais de Silence so I think all rooms are quiet. Do some comparison online to get the best...

“Sadist night porter”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

My colleague journalist and I were making a story about the landing of Normandy when we landed in Le Lion d'Or. Even though the room and dinner were slightly overpriced, we enjoyed the warm welcome and a fairly good meal. After dinner we went out for a stroll in the village. Before leaving, the night porter ensured us that we could re-enter the hotel just by ringing the bell. He would let us in. When we returned, the gate of the hotel was locked (2 chains) and nobody answered the bell (we rang the bell more than an hour). We were locked out at night, our belongings were inside. The next morning we confronted the night porter and his superior. The porter lied right in our face and in the face of his superior (he said he thought we were already in, but we had our key with us and that 's still no reason for not answering the doorbell) This is not a bad hotel, but one sick person like this porter ruins its entire reputation. Fire the man!

“WORST RESTAURANT IN NORMANDY?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

We did not stay at the hotel so I can't comment on the accomodation, but we went for dinner on the 27th October. It was shocking. The salad was "fridgy" and brown round the edges; there was no Thyme in the Boeuf au thym; one piece of chicken appeared to be half eaten; the music was on. Why? The lighting was up high and the room was far too hot. The loos were dark and worn. In other words the ambience was awful. It was aimed at the English and Americans who are very numerous in Normandy and, apparently, not very picky.

Room Tip: Try a different resto. There are lots to choose from.

“A day in Bayeux”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

We had used Rick Steves to guide us to hotels in Bayeux without booking ahead. Many were booked and we settled on the first one with space. This hotel was older with stairs only to access rooms( not geared to elderly & awkward with heavy bags). Parking was limited but available free overnight on the street. The room was spacious but older and tired looking. It was an expansive stay given that it was the last room available. We booked ahead next time. The hotel restaurant seemed more English in style and we wanted to experience local fare. Found a restaurant to eat nearby for dinner

“VERY FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012

Was recommended to this hotel by my brother...and not disappointed. Good location for visiting Bayeaux. Hotel comfortable, clean with very friendly staff. Didn't eat at the restaurant as my elderly in-laws are pie and chips types, so would have been wasted, but the inclusive breakfast was very good. Cathedral and tapestry literally about 10 minutes walk away and plenty of good restaurants close by. Will definately use this hotel on the next visit to the Normandy beaches.

Room Tip: There isnt a lift and the Hotel is over three floors. If travelling with elderly people, request a r...
