We were in Le Havre for a one day visit on board Celebrity Constellation during a transatlantic cruise from Southampton to Miami. We booked online with Overlord Tours several months in advance as part of a group of eight of our fellow cruise ship guests. Price was 110 Euro per person, which, I thought, was kind of pricey, even for a full day tour. Little did I know that this was to be THE single most INCREDIBLE (and worthwhile) tour I would experience in my 55 years.
My interest in military history began in 1969 in Ms. Swankee's 6th grade classroom, with a book on World War Two and was a significant factor in shaping my career in military aviation in both the Army AND the Navy.
If you have (or would like to gain) an appreciation for the sacrifices made, by people you never even knew existed, that allow us to enjoy the blessings and opportunities of our freedom, this is a tour you need to experience.
A very comfortable, large, modern van picked us up at the cruise ship terminal in Le Havre right after we were allowed to disembark on December 1st, 2012. Our incredibly knowledgeable guide gave us an overview of the days schedule and pointed out local areas of interest as he drove us the hour and a half to Normandy. The depth and breadth of his knowledge, as well as his ability to present that knowledge in a dramatic and captivating fashion was absolutely mind boggling.
Standing on the sands of Omaha Beach and Utah Beach, or in the fields surrounding Point Du Hoc and Sainte Mere Eglise, and considering the price paid by so many, to turn these places into the peaceful, historical sights they are today, should, hopefully, change anyone's world view.
