“Great town centre”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

I love the fact that this square is (mostly) pedestrianised. Traffic crawls through on the sides, but even then must give way to pedestrians at all times. And it's picturesque.

“Lille...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013

Lille is a strange kind of place, lovely buildings & some ugly ones to...Felt uncomfortable with the amount of strange looking characters wandering round in a drunken state with bottle/can in hand! The Grand Place is a nice area to sit & watch the world go by..Old town is nice with lovely traditional french restauarants...Not a place i would go back to..!!

“Watch the world go by.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013

The Grande Place is excellent for watching the world go by. Lots of people about make it an interesting meeting place. Lots of cafes and bars make this great for drinks and nibbles. The architecture in the square is fab to see. I could have looked at it all day. Buildings in Europe have such great architecture and makes it a feast for the eyes. The downside is - there is not enough of police on the streets at times. Other than this, its a treat to visit.

“Sorry not a patch on Bruges”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

We were rather disappointed after all the good reviews for Lille and the Grande Place but then our benchmark Bruges is very difficult to live up to. Like much of Lille it reflects the state of the economy and there are many vagrants (man and a can) about, which although are not a problem can make you feel uncomfortable.
Again like most of Lille English is not widely spoken and signage in English almost invisible so if your French is poor like ours you will have no idea what the restaurants are offering. We even had problems ordering in MacDonalds which could have been the staff having a laugh at our expense. How can they not understand McNuggets when there is a big display on the wall you're pointing to?
Yes we had a good weekend but would we go back- No, it's Bruges again for us for so many reasons.
