“Good for an afternoon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

We saw a wonderful Jan Fabre exhibition with more than 2 dozen large pieces depicting various aspects of life in Congo, all made with scarab beetles (homage to Hieronymus Bosch). But there was also a good collection of 17th and 18th century Dutch and Spanish painters as well as some interesting sculpture. The ceilings in parts of the building are wonderful mosaics. Worth the trip.

“Bad lighting”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

The painting collection is mediocre, but what bothered the most is the lack of lighting on the paintings. The paintings are very dark (no restorations?) and hardly visible.

“Lots to see - ill lit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

The splendid building sits in its square with much to invite and much to see. Lighting and labelling left a lot to be desired. In the Middle Ages section which was what I had gone to see, the reflection made it difficult to see many of the pictures except from one angle and then not always. Labelling was tired and sometimes missing. Having said that the mostly anonymous early Flemish works, much done in wood and some bas-reliefs were very much worth seeing; it makes one realise how much was destroyed at the 'Reformation'. Upstairs I gather that there are many exiled paintings including Constables and a deal of Rodin. I shall go back.

“Nice place but not breathtaking.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

If you're in the area, stop by and see some art. I wouldn't knock yourself out to see this place though as there are many other art museums in France that outshine this place. Nice 4 star place but not really a 5 star place.

Excellent collection of paintings for every taste including Bosch! beautiful Goya, Rubes, etc. Situated in the heart of the city, close to everything. Definitely worth seeing.
