This pretty little restaurant offers great service and delicious food at good prices. The staff were especially attentive and helpful.

“Unrefined”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

This attractive restaurant has friendly staff and is popular with locals as well as visitors. Service became slower as it filled up on a Saturday evening but was always efficient and courteous.

There is a good selection of local wines as well as those from other regions of France, and a heavy Cahors was decanted automatically. But surprisingly only two whites were offered by the glass, one, a muscat, having a particular taste not suited to all food so that in effect there was little choice.

Portions were generous and as noted elsewhere, prices are reasonable. The most expensive main course, coquilles St Jacques with summer vegetables in tarragon sauce, was 24 Euro.

Three main courses were disappointing. Veal in a herb crust came with deep-fried polenta (the visual effect being of fish fingers) and potato puree containing black truffle. There was a little demi-glace sauce but overall the dish was dry and unbalanced, there being no other vegetable.

Six St. Jacques were served, in a soup dish with a large quantity of cream and estragon sauce over haricots verts, peas and broad beans. Being slightly dry, the scallops were probably frozen. With the contents so combined, the effect was of a dish swimming in cream; the same applied to pintade fermier, a good-tasting fresh bird over a cream, wine and foie gras sauce with morelles. Rich and filling, but with the individual constituents hard to appreciate. The general impression left by the cooking was heavy-handed.

A meal for three people with one bottle and one glass of wine and three salads, was 137 Euro.

“My best restaurant experience in Toulouse”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

I spent a week in Toulouse in June. While most of the places I lunched were good, Le Genty Magre was definitely a cut above. I was greeted and seated promptly, the "menu of the day" selections were great both times. I had salmon tartare and a great grilled bar (whole fish) and wild rice for 14 euros, then saw salmon tartare on another restaurant board for 15 euros all by itself. The service was great both times. I was seated once in the lovely downstairs dining room, and once in a very pleasant, more formal dining space above. I didn't have dessert, but saw great desserts go by both times. I really regret that I didn't find it sooner, I could have eaten there every day.

“Best value for money.”

For less than 20€ got an excellent lunch and an acceptable wine. Finished with an ok espresso. All fresh, tasty and served by super professional waiters. Can highly recommend this restaurant.
