We travelled with a group of friends and family last summer. We chose the Moulin de Samaran because of its location and the amenities described on the website. The location is superb - rural France at its best, charming villages, stunning views and peace and quiet. The owners were very friendly and were happy to advise on local restaurants.
The moulin itself, however, was a great disappointment. The pool, which for us was an essential, was not usable. It was filled with dirty cold water and bird droppings. The sauna was broken, as was the gym equipment. We are an active family and had emailed the owners in advance to check that the advertised bicycles would be suitable for us. In fact, they could only be ridden after we had spend considerable time and money on basic maintenance.
Likewise, the website referred to fishing and games equipment which were in such poor states of repair as to render them completely unusable.
The grounds had the potential to be delightful, but they were so overgrown that the experience of walking through them was quite unpleasant. The terrace was dominated by a far too large fig tree which meant that there was no sun. As a previous review stated, there was only one cushion between all the loungers, and the barbecue was rusted and dirty. There was no view of the river from the terrace due to the overgrown bushes and the mill pond had silted over. There was no safe access to the river for swimming.
The apartment itself was nicely laid out with plenty of space for us all. However, every movement and noise from the apartment above could be heard which was not conducive to a restful holiday.
To summarise, this place has the potential to be an idyllic retreat but it falls far short of its potential and we would not recommend it as a holiday destination.
