“A very nice hotel in a very special location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2014

I've selected this hotel for a second time and you can be sure will not be the last. I like very much this grand hotel in this so special location, his quality and comfortability make sense if you search also a very special stay with your wife or similar. Well located and now with his swimming-pool for summer station, this hotel is still better today that before.

We selected this hotel because it is very close to the sanctuary. It's nearby the train station but since we were travling with luggage, it was only a 10 euro taxi ride.
It is a very charming place with helpful staff and the rooms are clean and comfortable. The building is old, but in a nice, historical way, well maintained and cozy. I recommend requesting in advance a room with a view of the sanctuary; it was very beautiful to see the town each morning. The rooms are quite comfortable and the wifi internet service was excellent, with a strong signal. The hotel is located near very good restaurants, but if you have a chance, do try the hotel restaurant for dinner. The house wine was very fairly priced and good! We enjoyed dinner there one evening, and it was a very nice experience. If you're willing to explore, there are lots of places in walking distance to grab a snack, drinks or shop for souvenirs. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Lourdes.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the sanctuary.

Lourdes is a strange place... people come to seek miracles and all that. We stayed during the spring (which we understand is not the busiest season), so it was nice to find easy hotel's car-parking in the middle of the town.

The service was pretty good, and the location is in the center, but the hotel itself is outdated: Toilet wooden doors somewhat rotten below, floor that squeaks when you step on several places, old difficult-to-use window etc.

Breakfast could be much better (cakes seemed to be outdated as well).

We spent a great week at Hotel de la Grotte.
The hotel is very well situated in a quiet area somewhat uphill but less than a km away from the busy sanctuary area.
It has a wonderful garden with a heated swimming pool were you can relax while the kids enjoy the warm pool (±28 °C). This is really unique in Lourdes. Useless to say that my kids loved the pool.
Internet for free is available everywhere around the hotel even at the pool area.
We had a fantastic garden view room on the first floor with shower and bathtub. It also had a small terrace from where you could see the river Le Gave but also part of the sanctuary.
On rare occasions we heard guests walking in their room above us as the floors are made out of wood.
We think that this adds to the "retro atmosphere" of this 19th century hotel.
You may probably not find the ultra luxury amenities of a palace hotel but the atmosphere and the friendliness of the personal will easily make up for this. Moreover we only paid a fraction for this hotel compared to a big city palace hotel.
There was always a family member on duty and the people at the reception did advice us on the many places to visit in the greater Lourdes area.
The food at the restaurant was very good and my son enjoyed receiving gluten free meals.
Just let the reception know beforehand and the cook will be glad to prepare gluten free dinner for you.
Half board guests are entitled to a 3 course menu that always included a choice of fish or meat.
Try also the super tasty crêpes Suzettes (French pancakes with Grand Marnier) for desert.
My son even got gluten free pancakes.
Our family is already looking forward to returning to Hotel de la Grotte.

The Grand Hotel de La Grotte is located in the main street of Lourdes, and the main tourist area which leads down to 'The Grotto'. To the rear of the hotel is a pathway through the garden which leads down to the Grotto with private exit, giving excellent access. A beautiful Restaurant open to the General Public with additional outside dining. Excellent French Food and wine. The bedrooms were of a typical older French style, spotless with the large open French Windows, in the evening we could hear the singing in the Grotto it was a very moving experience 'The sound of Angels' What more could one want.

Room Tip: Always check your needs, for example lifts, or lower floors for the elderly.

prompted by other reviews on these websites we thought we were going to a 4 star hotel....result I would not even give it a ONE star.....dirty, dismal, dark, disaster....we asked for an upgrade but they said they were booked even though we saw no other guest in the hotel...we deserved better for the money we paid...reported problems were never fixed
