“La Chartreuse resembles American motel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

La Chartreuse is located across the river from central Cahors, and although it is not a long walk to the medieval town (perhaps 15 minutes), we did feel a bit cut off from the part of town that interested us. The motel itself lacks European charm, but the room was adequate and clean. We did have an excellent dinner at the attached restaurant.
We were travelling without a laptap, and were disappointed that such a modern hotel had no computer facilities for guests.

A pleasant hotel, overlooking the river, good location to the town of Cahors.

I stayed here for three nights October 8 to 11 2012 with an organised coach group, had two evening meals and one luncheon, they were good French meals. The three buffet breakfasts, two were below the expected standard.

The hotel has a lift, the bedroom was on the third floor with a balcony overlooking the river, it was comfortable, bright and airy, windows you could open fully. Good room lighting, cupboard and hanging space. The bed was comfortable and the room clean, also an air conditioning unit, and a Philips flat screen television wall fitted. A desk, two chairs and a table.

The exterior wall lights to the hotel remained on all night, you have to close the curtains to keep the lights out, they are not turned off, as the windows can open fully, a safety issue.

The bedroom is a hard flooring so you can hear all the noises from the above room. There is a noisy fridge with beer and soft drinks provided at a cost.

The hotel has a bar but the selection was disappointing, little variety, allright for a beer and wine, but I do not drink either.

I like to alter my buffet breakfast variations but only the 1st day was good quality, 2nd and 3rd was below the expected standard, but it was included being part of the group.

The 1st day , there was a cereal selection, apple or orange juice, tea infusions, coffee, an additional coffee hot drinks machine, chocolate sachets, plus warm and cold milks, hard boiled eggs in the shell, cold meats, cheeses, fruit salad, fruit flavoured yoghurts, miniature chocolate au pains and croissants. Selection of breads and the traditional French bread stick, pancakes, syrup, toasting bread, a toaster and preservatives. I had the French bread, boiled egg, pancakes warmed in the toaster, fruit salad, warm lumpy chocolate, coffee and orange juice and preservative.

The 2nd day contents as above, but no toasting bread or toaster, unable to warm the pancakes, had a chocolate sachet but the milk was luke warm, just about dissolved the chocolate mixture. There was no staff around to ask about the toaster. There were a few hard boiled eggs left, but they were not freshly boiled, I noticed this on the 1st day, after this I didn't have another one.

The 3rd day contents as the 2nd day, without the apple juice, no toasting bread or toaster, no additional coffee hot drinks machine, unable to heat the pancakes, only 2 tea infusions, the milk was warm, so unable to have a hot chocolate sachet, had coffee instead.
I had the French bread stick, there was only one other loaf of local bread on display, the French bread was very chewy, and difficult to digest, this was not fresh bread, not like the previous two days, and a deterioration of quality.

I asked the one member of staff who was handling the entire breakfast room, I said to him toaster ?, his reply, 'non' meaning no in French. The quality and service at breakfast time is below a required three star hotel standard.

But with the three meals included and taken at the hotel, has to be averaged out for ratings on value and service, without this, less than three.

About Cahors, this hotel is the only one situated a few minutes walk over the bridge to the main part of Cahors, very easy to get to, by walking or driving. The population is just under 21,000. The weather was warm, As I was there out of season, most eateries close in the evening, and Cahors becomes a ghost town. I managed to find a restaurant open off the main street.

Room Tip: Top floor is the fourth, then you cannot hear the noises of people walking about on a hard flooring...

I stayed here for one night as part of a business thing... The hotel has a very pleasant situation right on the river bank looking towards Cahors. From the outside, the hotel looks nothing special and the rooms are quite simple. However, the rooms are clean and there is instant water from the taps and shower. My room had a balcony. In the evening if you wish to, you can sit out on the terrace looking across the river. There is a nice little bar and I have to say, the drinks were extremely well priced compared to a city hotel. I think the plus side to the hotel is the food as I was very surprised to find that the restaurant was very busy, in fact at lunchtime it was completely full and that the quality of the food was excellent. If you intend to visit Cahors (I didn't get the chance) this is a very good choice for somewhere to stay. Note that the area has some caves if you are into that kind of thing.

My Wife & I stayed a few nights here while visiting relatives and the area. It is situated in a beautiful spot next to the river. Our room overlooked the town and bridges across the river. It was an easy walk just over the bridge into the town center, with great restaurants, market, shops, cathedral, boat trips etc. Hotel restaurant was great also. Staff very helpful.

Stayed one night en route from Toulouse to Charente. Lovely location on the Lot. Room overlooking river is a must. In addition to the view of the town we were fortunate to see otters playing in the river! Don't be put off by the exterior of the building, rooms are modern and clean. Downside though is rooms on lower floors have water pipes from higher floors situated in wardrobes and they are noisy. We were unlucky to have a guest above us take a very late shower and leave taps on so the noise continued for most of the night!

I was staying one night having taken a detour on my way home from a holiday in the Dordogne to visit the closing night of the Cahors Blues festival. My room had a small balcony overlooking the river and was perfect for strolling across the bridge into the main part of town. There is parking immediately outside the hotel and across the road. I was offered more secure parking (as I drive a Porsche) but was not concerned to leave the car outside. The room was fairly basic but clean. My two gripes were: (i) the sound insulation up and down the building was poor - I could hear the toilet flushing (and more!) in the room above mine and (ii) the bathroom layout was such that I had to squeeze past the loo to get in and out of the shower. In short, this place is great for a night or two - location and cleanliness are my priorities and this hotel did not let me down.

Room Tip: Not that I did much more than sleep there but a room on the river side was nice

Don't judge the book by the cover may be the tip on this hotel. It looks like a 1960 concrete block from the outside but inside it is lovely. The location is great and the rooms are pleasant, clean and peaceful with lovely views over the river.
