This little town is somewhat aside from the main tourist routes (which may have been its salvation so far) yet poised beautifully near Avignon, Nimes and the nr 1 attraction, the Pont-du-Gard.
With its many towers and lovely sandstone buildings, it has a truly medeival touch and at the same time, a quite unexpected sophistication.
Small and compact on its hilltop, it is a great place to spend some time and explore 'la France profond' which presents itself in the numerous villages around and into the foothills of the rather wild Cevennes mountains with ravines & river gorges.
Not to mention the history....
Come and discover this sleeping beauty before she awakens!

Second time down here this time with our own car. We did so to give us more freedom while down here. We stayed at a gite in Arpaillargues about 3 miles away. You don't see many reviews of self catering places but France holds some little gems in some small villages. This was one, owned by a British couple, it was a lovely place. This is our second time here we liked it so much. The town of Uzes is full of character, the Saturday market is a joy. Using this as a base you can reach most of the "must see" sights, Nimes, Arles and the Carmargues, you must see the Viaduc of Millau, it takes your breath away. All in all a very relaxing experience.

This delightful town dating back to Roman times is a gem. The architecture is beautiful, the alleys wind their way through the town, past the Renaissance houses, and finally lead to squares lined with arcades and ornamental fountains. Just the place to sit in the shade sipping coffee.

It is also a place to wander around the quaint shops or visit the colourful street market held on a Saturday. Apparently this is one of the best in France and it was extremely busy the day we were there and the stalls were fantastic, not the usual market tack.

Make sure you see the Duchy Castle and the Tour Fenestrelle, a local equivalent of the leaning tower of Pisa.

We stayed in the La Taverne Logis, which is just up the side street from the tourist information board, and right in the centre of town. It was very old, but lovely and clean with only 9 rooms. Across the road from the hotel was their restaurant that specialised in local dishes. However, breakfast was served in the hotel foyer.

This city was one of the most beautiful and romantic of all the locations we visited in Provence. While most of the more well-known cities we saw (i.e. Avignon) fell short of our expectations, Uzes surpassed them and/or finally fulfilled them. Absolutely a must!
