“Not a hotel I would ever use again”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2011

Having read the reports this seemed like a good choice, as stated the location is great however, the room we had was similar to the ones I used in the 70,s as a student in Paris, to descibe it as tired would be generous, it was dull the whole feel was of a squat, the bathroom was dated and not a place to enjoy using. The staff could have been more helpful when it came to parking we paid 18 euros for a night in the Wilson underground park ,they should have told us of the masses of free parking (after 6.30) around the corner .

This is the third trip I've done to Perpignan following my rugby league team, Leeds Rhinos. Have stayed in the Ibis and the Aragon but wanted somewhere a bit more central. This hotel is ideally placed, right by the Castillet and the Canal. Only a short walk from anywhere really. The rooms, although not the Ritz, were clean and comfortable with all that you needed for a comfortable stay. Even though our room was on the front of the hotel, it was quiet and peaceful, with a lovely view over the canal. So lovely not to have to walk too far back from an evening out :) We didn't eat breakfast there, as it was a bit pricey, but we spoke to people who ate there and they said it was a good breakfast.

i think hotel de france is a below average hotel ..possible ok for one night ..but would not want to stay longer ,
saying that the staff were friendly and the place was clean just dated in some areas...the beds were comfy ..the breakfast is continental and ok but again a small choice .
For us our problems were when we arrived to find the 2 rooms that we booked one of them being a family room that we paid extra for a upgrade ended up being a twin bed standard room with no child bed !! .......was told it not on there booking log ..so thankfully we had relivent paperwork and they placed a spare bed in a standard room needless to say it was cramped ,but as only staying the night that did not matter much to us but would of been dissapointed if had to stay longer ,other small fault was no door on the bathroom had a shower curtain to slide across ..then when we went to the other room was shocked that we could open the door without a key !!!! the door hinge was hanging of had to go downstairs to reception to ask for a screwdriver to fix it the only thing they could provide was a bottleopener ?!? ...needless to say we did not leave anything of value in our rooms just incase ...
we now know there are better hotels in the area and if we go back again i think we will try a different hotel .

Among the things we valued most about this hotel, it was the English speaking staff - especially Alice - who made the hotel a great value and experience. They were so friendly and helpful, even making calls for us when our rental car died. Great location, comfy beds and quiet rooms too.

We had an unexpected stop in Perpignan, and the staff of the Hotel de France were extremely helpful in getting us a room on short notice. The room was large for the cost, with a nice bathroom. The hotel is right next to the old city center of Perpignan, within walking distance of lots of historic sites. The bed was a little hard to sleep on, but that was really our only problem with the room.

The hotel is well positioning within the centre of the town & whilst there isn't any parking, the nearest car parks are easy to find. The reception staff spoke good english & were very helpful.

The room wasn't large but as we were only staying one night, that was fine. It was clean & the bed was very comfortable. The facilities, TV, hairdryer etc all worked well & were clean: shower took a bit of time to warm up. The breakfast buffet was varied and the breakfast room pleasant. The hotel itself is a bit dark and has a hostel type feel, which lowers the overall perception of the hotel.

Ok for a one or two night stay.

Very central to shops and the main 'riverwalk' type area. Hotel is very, very clean despite being old. Staff was very friendly and let us store our backpacks, computers etc. without a fuss. One problem was that we stayed the night of a world cup game involving algeria - the street noise was unbearable for a few hours, because algeria had a tie game...We got a free upgrade to a 'superior room' (from a 'comfort' room) and it was very big room by W. European standards.

Also, while it's very central and near the bus station, it's about a 15 minute walk from the train station - good to know if you plan to take a train to villefranche etc.
