“It's colossal..........”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

A "must see" in Languedoc-Roussillion region of France, the Fort of Salses was built by the Spaniards at the end of 15th century. At the time, the fortress guarded the frontier between Spain & France. By 1642 it was taken by the French and Treaty of the Pyrenees created the border of today. The layout of the fort provides fine example between medieval castle and a fortress of modern time. It's great size provided housing for close to 1,500 soldiers & 300 horses. The exterior walls are
12 to 14 ft. thick and the moat around the fort is 25 to 30 ft. deep. It's red
brickwork creates the rose hue as you look at the colossal scale of the fort. The rectangular plan with round towers at each corner is a classical design. The Keep, with it's own water supply dominates the fort. Inside walls, the maze of tunnels & inner courtyards, was created to confuse and distract the enemy. So today, the guided tour is the only way to go and prevent you from being lost.

“Guided tour of Castle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

The castle was very impressive !! The guided tour was fantastic, without it you wouldn't really understand the real and true meaning of the particular and fascinating architecture of that Castle/fort. Its really a small trip in history and I must say that the guide excellent! I really enjoyed it.

“Interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2012

The chateau is an interesting place and the guided tour gives you a lot of information about the way they built fortresses at the end of the mediavel times. It's interesting how they stopped building fortresses on high spots at this time, and startet more like "digging them" into the ground. The guide was very good - even though she just spoke in french. If you don't understand french you will loose quite a lot of the story - unfortunately.
