We stayed at the BW L'Orangerie the last week in June during a 10-day long driving tour through France. This is an excellent hotel for the money (only 79 Euros per night), with a good restaurant, large comfortable rooms (at least by French standards) and a very nice swimming pool surrounded by gardens. The breakfast is also one of the better spreads you'll find in France. The staff is very helpful and will serve drinks at the pool. The woman on duty the day we checked in recommended an excellent restaurant in town (Les Alizes) which we can definitely vouch for. The hotel is a little tricky to find at first but it is well located, right off the A62 yet only 3/4 mile from the city center.
Nimes itself is a precious little city - lots of Roman ruins, great restaurants, an excellent patisserie (Noailles), and beautiful fountains and gardens. The people were extremely friendly, especially in the shops. We also met many of the hotel guests (atmosphere lends quite well to socializing) and they were all quite friendly as well. All in all it was a great time - we only wish we could have stayed longer than the 2 nights we had booked!
If you are heading down to the Provence area of France you should definitely stop in Nimes and definitely stay at L'Orangerie!
