“Charming Art-Deco hotel in the centre of a historic town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2014

We spent 3 nights at Hotel Imperator as part of a tour, and I enjoyed the old world charm of this Art-Deco hotel. The entrance opens on to a large lounge area, with a bar to one side, and through the restaurant is a huge courtyard. An antique elevator will transport guests upstairs, but I mostly used the wide staircase. I did enjoy a glass of wine in the bar, near the photo of Ernest Hemingway, who was a guest in the past.
We were lucky to have a lovely, elegant room with a sitting area to the side, and 2 balconies overlooking the street. Also, a bowl of huge fat cherries were in our room at check in, and much appreciated. Our room was always kept clean and made up, and the bed was very comfortable. The free wifi worked well in the room.
Breakfast was very pleasant with tables under cover or in the courtyard. We could have eggs cooked to order, something I did not find in many hotels in France. The fat cherries appeared again at breakfast, along with lots of other delicious fruit, a great variety of fruit juices, and the champagne was always there. There was a huge spread of hot and cold food, something for everyone.
The location was perfect, just a short walk around the corner to the centre of town, and easy to see the Temple of Diana or the Arena.
The hotel is located on the Quais de la Fontaine, which were the embankments of the spring that provided water for the city. the gardens were laid out in the 18th century.
We also visited the Pont du Gard, which is about 20 km away.

Almost everything about this hotel is wonderful. The staff couldn't be more helpful. It is a beautiful hotel especially the original 1930's elevator. The huge circular tub and shower is great and the room was comfortable and quiet. The only negative was the toilet seat was cracked and being an older hotel that will be going through a renovation soon I could not find an outlet to charge my phone or camera. I had to crawl under a table and unplug a lamp

This hotel is charming and the management & staff are eager to please. One unique feature of this hotel is their old-time pulley elevator. It works great but doesn't hold a lot of people at a time. Not all the rooms are the same size but our room was quite large with
a small sitting area. The locks on the doors are opened with a skeleton key. The locks can be difficult to open until you get used to it but the staff will help you when you arrive. Many of the rooms can be viewed on their website. Their bar is charming and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. Our breakfast was included each morning and it was excellent. A buffet of fruits, cheese, salmon, cereal, pastries are a few of the selections. They also will cook you an omelette or eggs of your choice. The hotel is in walking distance of the city centre.

Room Tip: Check the options available. A few people in our group traveling alone had smaller rooms.n the hote...

We stayed here as part of a (not cheap) tour. Where to start? On arrival we were greeted by friendly staff and a beautiful lobby with old world charm and superb gardens at the rear of the hotel. A young woman gave us a brief presentation on the history of the hotel - it was a favourite of Ernest Hemmingway, Ava Gardner and Pablo Picasso have stayed there. Lovely but... The room was VERY disappointing. Very old decor and very run down and lacking in maintenance. The wardrobe was tiny and the bathroom miniscule. There was a 3 teir glass table in the bathroom that I had to relocate into the bedroom so we had enough room to move around. My husband and I are not big people but we struggled with the size. Barely enough room to step out of the shower, to the point where I tripped on two occassions. The room had little to no soundproofing, as we could hear conversation in the adjoining room on the two nights it was occupied. The only positive of the room was the lovely balcony but that was all. I do understand that the hotel is not fully renovated, but we did discover that other people on our tour had been located in much better rooms. Clearly it was a bit of a lottery. However, not having yet fully renovated all the rooms is no excuse for dropping basic maintenance on the ones that aren't (eg holes in walls left unrepaired). I loved Nimes but I would not stay at this hotel if revisiting. We went on two tours and stayed at 6 different hotels and this was by far the worst. Unfortunately, the beauty of the lobby and the grounds and the very yummy breakfast was negated by the very poor quality and condition of the room.

Room Tip: Make sure you specifically request a renovated room

The place shows it's heritage with great service, lovely rooms and simply classy. Price was very reasonable. Requested a twin room and got 106 overlooking the rear patio so quiet and very comfortable. Watch out for the continental breakfast that can come to half the cost of the room.

Room Tip: Look for deals on line as this hotel is widely served by most hotel booking sites

Cher Monsieur,
Bien Cordialement,
Christophe CHALVIDAL
Directeur Général

This hotel has a great feel of past glory , from a superb 19th century lift to the lobby in Art Deco style . The bedrooms are large and comfortable decorated in a traditional style . Nice open air dining with a garden which is good when it is so hot . Conveniently centrally located . Good breakfast . Friendly staff . Great modern art in the lobby
Has a slightly "colonial" feel maybe some may think it needs updating but I liked it . Interesting history and photos of past celebrities who have stayed there
Excellent free wi-fi
One is aware of noise from adjoining rooms
