“Central location but slightly shabby”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2012

Very central location. Friendly staff. On first glance, room looked great but after a while cracks began to show! Bathroom was getting old, shower very poor. No hair dryer in room - when one was dropped up it proved unsafe to use. However, air conditioning was excellent, which was essential in the hot weather. This hotel was probably quite glamorous in the past but now needs some money spent on it to bring it up to a high standard again. But as a medium grade hotel it's fine. We didn't have the breakfast so can't comment on it. The street directly outside is a little run down but turn the corner and you are in the heart of the town so can't really complain about that!

The Newhotel la Baume is housed in a splendid old building with a Renaissance staircase. We had an comfortable, and reasonably spacious, room on the second floor. The air conditioning was turned off when we arrived, so the atmosphere was stifling, but once turned on, everything was fine. The bathroom and toilet are separate, but at different sides of the room. As there is no washbasin in the toilet, this means that you have to walk around the bed to wash your hands.

Although the hotel information referred to free WIFI access, this was only possible in the reception area. This was not a great problem, but was mildly irritating.

Eating breakfast in the courtyard was a pleasure, and the helpful staff were happy to provide extras such as boiled eggs.

I see that some visitors have complained that they didn’t feel safe in the neighbourhood. I don’t understand why. There are a few kids who hang around on the street, but they are in no way threatening, and the hotel is ideally situated for the old town. The remains of a Roman gateway (complete with a statue of Augustus Caesar) are a stone’s throw away, the Carrée and the Contemporary Art Museum just around the corner. We would definitely stay here again.

This hotel is set in a beautiful old house of Nimes with gorgeous stonework and vaulted ceilings.
We usually stay in Nimes at a more modest 2star nearby but thought we should treat ourselves to this more expensive and grander looking hotel. We not bothered by lack of parking as that is unavoidable if you want to stay in the old town which was not designed for cars. (its charm).
However on arrival in morning to leave bags I overheard a guest checking out mentioning all the problems she had with plumbing during her stay. The receptionist smiled sweetly as she listened, took no notes , said nothing , and promptly carried on dealing with other clients quite unmoved by the negative feedback.
When shown our room , it had a nice old bath but no wall attachment for the rather tatty shower . As we wanted a functiuoning shower for the hot weather she found us another room with a very modern walk in shower . It looked great . When it came to use it there was no way you could get it at the right temperature (the cold and hot would not mix, it was either freezing or almost scalding (exactly the complaint I overheard).
The wardrobe was also broken so nowhere to hang clothes - we just improvised.
The advertised free wifi needed a complicated log in , only worked in reception, and frequently needed relogin.
The general decor of the room is lovely, including good quality bed but again the carpet looked like it was from pre-refiurbishment era.
Also the room aircon just could not handle the Med summer so it was pretty warm at night. We hate over cold aircon so it wasnt a big deal for us but I think many people might have found it stifling.
We are Nimes fans so will continue to come for short stays but until this hotel injects some urgently needed funds and pays for a good maintenance crew I don't think it justifies the price tag. Such a shame as it is such a beautiful building. Meanwhile back to our reliable good value 2star....

Room Tip: Our room was on ground floor facing back of hotel (Rue d'Espagne) which is very quiet at night...

You can't park outside the hotel to unload if you come by car - but just continue straight on until the street ends (about 100 m), and you'll find an indoor parking lot which we used. Very reasonable. The pavement in the street is very nice, so it's very easy to roll your suitcases back to the hotel (provided they've got wheels)
Our room was small, but very charming. It looked very newly renovated. TV and fridge. The aircondition could have been a bit more powerful. The bathroom was also nice - the only problem was that there was no shower curtain and no way to hang the shower on the wall. Taking a shower will wet the whole bathroom and you have to hold the showerhead by hand.
The one BIG problem was that there was no WIFI in the room - even though our voucher said it was. The reception told us that was because of the renovation... but that we could connect in the reception, which for us was not very practical. We however did try - and the next problem shows up. The connection was very unstable and we had to type in the ident and access code about every fifth minute, which really is a nuicense.
I however loved the open, old staircase and the building itself. I see that some visitors complain about noise. We had a very quiet stay - didn't hear anything either from the corridor of from the street (our room faced the street but was on the 2nd floor). We felt totally safe and did not fint the street different than most of the other streets in old Nimes.
Just around the corner (turn right when you exit and take the first street on your right) there was a loverly square with five different restaurants. We had dinner in one of them and had a wonderful meal.

Room Tip: I don't know wether all their rooms are renovated, so it's probably a good idea to ask to ge...

Stayed here with friends, another couple, in April. While the location is central, the street is quite run down and a little dodgy. There is no place to park outside hotel, so dropping off luggage is a challenge. We pulled up directly outside the hotel, on a narrow one way street and quickly unloaded the car while traffic behind us waited. They were not happy! Hotel is charming, with a very quaint interior, old stone staircase and open interior courtyard. Room was large and clean. Hotel staff were friendly but receptionist seems to do multiple jobs. However, the furniture is cheap and shoddy, towels thin and bathroom fixtures poor. Safe in room had been removed. Good quality coffee maker in room. we did not eat breakfast, as thought the price too high. Frankly, we have stayed in better places for the same price, notably Avignon, so hesitate to recommend.

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking street which was quiet. Friends had room overlooking courtyard which was n...

Lovely hotel, modern decor and very clean (much better than expected for the very low price paid). Impressive inner courtyard with stone staircases and seating area for coffee. Our room on the 2nd floor was quiet, plenty big enough, very clean and well kept. 2 windows overlooking a narrow street to the back of the building, modern bathroom and separate toilet, fresh bedding, comfortable bed, fridge, safe, desk and chairs. The staff were very friendly and helpful and sights/cafes/restaurants easily within walking distance. The hotel is on a street with roman remains and a church at one end, a shopping mall and 24 hour parking at the other. Didn't have breakfast there so cannot comment on that. Would recommend.
