“special, in the good way”

I've tried over a dozen restaurants in a similar price range in Montpellier over the year I've been here and I wouldn't go back to most of them. Le Passé Composé is different. Two things make it stand out: the eclectic ambiance, orchestrated by the waiter, the cook, and the music they play; and the food, original and perfectly prepared. Their "terre et mer" - ie surf & turf - is a clever mix of marinated fish and scallops and half-cooked foie gras that I've seen nowhere else. They also have an appetizer of scallops tartare with vanilla - amazing! Not a single bad note to my taste. A great value for the price in downtown Montpellier. We'll go back. This restaurant should be on the to-go list of all food fans in Montpellier.

“Hidden gem”

We stumbled across this place by chance during a walk around the city. And we were glad we went in as it was a really nice surprise. The place is a bit quirky - but the food was fantastic. It was cutting edge cuisine with a mix of unusual flavours. For example, the main of hambur coeur decadent included avacado and wasabi, scallop, mashed apple, escalope of foie gras. The other main we had was the fish of the day, grilled and stuffed with olive paste. My starter for 5 euro was a skewer of three massive scallops in a mandarine sauce. The mains came with a side dish with carrots, courgettes and mashed potatoes with some sort of cream sauce which was delicious - normally carrots never taste of anything!

After the dessert the owner offered us a digestive of orange juice and rum. All in all, a great dinner. Obviously you pay for quality - we spent around 80 euros (in two) for two three course meals with a bottle of wine - and we were very happy to pay that. Would definitely go back if we are ever in Montpellier again.
