“Good value and location for the centre ville of Montpellier”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2013 via mobile

Our room was pleasant and the hotel is in a great location. The staff could not have been more helpful. Parking was available at a nearby lot for a discounted rate. Overall, this hotel is a good value for Montpellier and we will stay here again when we visit Languedoc next year.

This hotel claims, to use their words, it has retained the charm of its 16th century architecture and includes a large terrace with beautiful views of secret gardens of Montpellier. The reality is quite different. Externally the front of the hotel is two rather plain older homes on a narrow street too difficult to bring a car up. Inside the lobby/entryways are cold, plasticky, cut-rate modern in tone. The hallways are narrow and dark; the lights go off before one has gotten to where one is going. Our room was small, the bathroom smaller, and furnishings oldish and rather tacky, with no charm, though the bed was comfortable. The "backboard" of our bed was a piece of cloth hung on a rod on the wall. And there were not inviting comfortable public areas in the hotel to relax in either. The large terrace is actually the breakfast seating area rather than a place to relax at various times during the day. And it does look over a garden - but one that is actually the busy outdoor dining area for the restaurant next door. Hardly secret!

The cold breakfast is expensive already for what it is, and there is an extra charge of several Euros if one wants some warm eggs. When we asked for a dinner restaurant recommendation, the clerk referred us to the place next door, where main dishes alone were about $50 each, not very helpful.

If this were an inexpensive hotel, one might accept its hohum quality; but we were also in Barcelona, Arles, and Marseilles on this trip, in hotels that cost less than the Guilhem but were much more charming, inviting, and better appointed. Probably the worst room/public areas combination we've ever had in France, and we have visited often in a variety of places around the country.

What a let down.

Room Tip: We booked two rooms, for two nights each, five months in advance of our visit, not at their lowest r...

spent 10 days in montpellier recently at le guilhem. room was quite small although it was one of the cheaper rooms and others looked bigger from the odd peek i got while passing.Very comfortable and perfectly adequate for our requirements. cleaned daily to high standard. breakfast was a bit expensive but there are plenty of places within a few hundred metres to buy a coffee and croissant. quiet location 5mins from town centre which is a pleasant stroll. staff very good [all seemed to speak good english] and friendly.
affordable at about €100 a night midseason. we will be staying here again. highly recommended

The location of the hotel is great but it is virtually impossible to get there by car (maybe with a Smart or a Mini!!) to drop off luggage so you have to walk a few blocks uphill from the parking lot to the hotel. So maybe if you travel lightly or by train/taxi it might be a good choice but not very convenient otherwise.
Add to that smelly carpets in the hallway and outdated furniture in the room, you might want to try somewhere else. The nice breakfast on their nice terrasse and the overall quality of the service made up for some of our disappointments.

Parking is a good three blocks away from the hotel and walking uphill with luggage was no sinecure. We were given an upgrade from a friendly staff but having to go up several levels of steps to get to our rooms dragging luggage was a turn off. While they advertise free Wifi, the signal is not strong enough for the rooms and several of us had to sit in the lobby to get any type of signal. The biggest turn off was "dogs allowed" in the breakfast room having to fend off an ugly bulldog of another guest whose dog was looking for food and attention...no thanks! Rugs were old and smelly!

This is a friendly hotel in a great location in the heart of the largely pedestrianised old city so an easy walk to the main sights and nearby parking with discount. Biggest drawback is getting bags to the hotel as drop off is not convenient. Building seems a combo of two or three old houses and is a bit disjointed but rooms are comfortable and well appointed.

Hotel Guilhem is situated in the old part of Montpellier. It's a stonethrow away from the Cathedral (which can be seen from the rooms on the garden side of the hotel) and close to the promenade du Peyrou. If you want to experience Montpellier's idyllic old town, the hotel is an excellent choice, particularly if you don't travel by car.

The rooms are scattered over three adjecent medieval townhouses lining up along a narrow alley (pedestrians only) with several restaurants. Given such an authentic medieval environment, some compromises must be accepted: the public areas in the hotel are rather small; not all rooms in the hotel can easily be reached by elevator; rooms are very unequal. However, the hotel is very well kept and the staff very friendly and accommodating.

I enjoyed a very pleasant, clean and tastefully appointed "chambre grand confort" overlooking the garden. The room was equipped with all facilities, appealing bathroom, and even a small entrance hall with an additional door for privacy. Accordingly it was very quiet during the day and the night. In the evening, the garden restaurant next door was busy and voices of the guests could be heard. But since it was a hot summer night, the (sound proof) windows had to be closed anyway to let the efficient air conditioning do its job. A truely gorgeous experience is the breakfast on the large balcony shaded by old trees. It's very good and absolutely worth its price. Don't miss it!
