“It's all front”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012 via mobile

The place looks grand and it's in a great spot. But the rooms are very tired and the cooked breakfasts were tasteless and overpriced. Montpellier was fun and we hope to return someday, but not to this hotel.

The location of this hotel is very good for visiting all the locations within Montpellier. The Hotel is typical French and we found that the our room to be very comfortable. However, the bathroom and shower needed upgrading. The dining room and food were good and the outside facility for evening dinner is also very good. We found that an evening dip in the swimming pool was ideal and most welcome. We enjoyed our six days at this Hotel and it's location. Last but not least the staff were very helpful.

We chose this hotel at last minute as an overnight stop of our journey. It is a fairly new built. Rooms are very small but it was enough for a night. It has a great pool for children, they can let some energy out. Breakfast is nothing extraordinary but decent.
Staff is friendly and resourceful. Hotel is located next to an entertainment center with restaurants and children's activities. Good value for your money as long as you are aware that you are staying at a place just to sleep and shower. Free parking and wi-fi in the room, free is always a good thing, right?

My wife and I spent a week in Montpellier on a work assignment. The location of the Holiday Inn couldn't have been more convenient: a very short walk from the train station, the main conference centre and conference hall CORUM and an even shorter walk to the delightful, bustling Comedie. A slightly longer but still brief stroll brings you to the Arc de Triomphe and statue of Louis XIV as a Roman Emperor!

The hotel's welcome couldn't have been friendlier with an upgrade to an executive room and a recommendation to the best brasseries in town. This property is a bit grander than what one expects from Holiday Inn and shows its more gilded past as the Metropole with a lovely old wood elevator on display. The hotel grounds are tranquil and pleasant with a swimming pool surrounded by palms and including a very pleasant outdoor sitting area.

Our room was of a generous size with windows which opened and allowed some of the incredible sun-kissed air of southern France to mix with the air conditioning. WiFi was free, occasionally slow, but generally reliable. The minibar came with a couple of free bottles of badoit. The safe worked; the bathroom adequate. All the staff we met from the front desk to the breakfast room were pleasant and accommodating. Breakfast was generous and happily served till 10:30 on weekdays, 11:00 on weekends: perfect for those of working late or with late night habits. Sadly, the bar closed at 11PM.

Of course, just being in Montpellier and in its beautiful surroundings, whether mountain or sea, is nearly pleasure enough. Nearby Saint Guilhem-le-Desert is a particularly tranquil outpost of Paradise and then Aigues-Mortes is also not to be missed. I would add one more essential when you visit Montpellier: Amorino serves the best gelato I have ever tasted. It became a daily habit along with salads at various bistros on the Comedie and Esplanade. We're going back to Montpellier for our 20th anniversary later this fall and will likely re-visit the Holiday Inn.

Room Tip: Get an executive room if you can: 602 was quite good.

Make no mistake, this hotel is in one of the best locations in Montpellier for a a tourist. It is 5 minutes from the Montpellier St Roch railway station and the same distance in the opposite direction by the Place du Comedie - the main square of Montpellier.
We arrived at 10.00 in the morning and was encouraged by the Grand feel of he entrance lobby. But, we were kept waiting for four hours to get a room. We were told, because of the delay, that we would be upgraded. Well, I would not have liked to see the original room if this was the upgrade! The room was ok with comfortable beds and inward facing towards the courtyard and pool. The carpet was stained all over
The TV worked fine and there was enough tea and coffee for the kettle provided etc.THere is a good cold working fridge.
The bathroom was from a gothic horror story, however. The bath was chipped and stained beyond cleaning or repair. The sink was chipped and pitted and there was rust and stained floors throughout. Evidence of hair, both head and pubic was in evidence in all floor corners and the calcium deposits in the corners looked as if they had never been cleaned.. Not nice for bare feet! The ceiling tiles were stained and ugly with old water residue.
Again, after working out the tap system, there was plenty of hot water at all times.
The staff were at all times helpful, if ocasionally, unable to understand us fully.
Nevertheless, if you, like us, wanted to go to Avignon, Bezier, Narbonne, Carcassonne, Perpignan , Marseille or even Paris, the station was just around the corner, and so so easy to use- even for poor or non French speakers.
I cannot recommend the hotel because it is really, really tired and in need of a thorough overhaul

Room Tip: Always ask to see the room before you agree to stay

This is my 7th stay in 5 years at this hotel. I've always liked it as it;s very central, walking distance from centre of the old town. I always sleep like a baby in this hotel.
The main lobby area is reminiscent of better times when the Hotel Metropole was at it's peak.
The rooms are a bit tired but well apportioned and I'm glad that the old carpet has been removed from the hallways in favour of the original marble flooring.
We had a problem with a shower that, but the staff are great and responded in under an hour with a full repair.
The pool is small but it never clams to be anything huge, perfect for a dip to cool off after sunbathing in the courtyard.
Breakfast was good, I've had far worse in much better hotels in New York!
Evening meal was off the scale and very very good value!

On the whole the staff in this hotel are great, the food is great, but the hotel itself could really do with a make over and some of the attention to detail (i.e. air con stains on the hallway ceilings etc) could be resolved but aren't.
I love the location and would have no bother booking for the next trip there though I may pay the extra and stay at the newly built Crowne Plaza (500m away) if the budget fits.

This hotel is pushing its luck with four stars! The rooms really need refurbishment - mine had no mini bar and had stains from the air conditioning. 'Swimming pool' is more paddling pool
BUT the restaurant Le Closerie is really nice under a chef who knows how to cook and trying out his skills at the hotel. It's under the shade of the trees in the courtyard (see the photos).
