“Nice hotel for overnight stop”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 weeks ago

Stayed here overnight as part of a Shearings tour. We were given a room overlooking the front of the hotel, which was spacious and clean. I don't usually sleep well in a new environment but slept like a log here. Mattress was quite hard and suited my back problem but may not suit everybody. The shower was hot and powerful. We were given a 3 course set meal at dinner which was very nice indeed and breakfast was good, plenty of choice. Tea and coffee making facilities and toiletries provided. The staff were polite and helpful.

the hotel is great centrally located in Montpellier, but a very quiet hotel
clean, the rooms are large, with a huge tv, although all channels are French
would definitely stay again
very reasonable price for FISE week

Room Tip: I would say back of the hotel would be quieter as front is on a main road

This hotel has great welcoming helpful staff and a great location for me to walk to the place I do business.

The walk means I avoid transport by taxi which are never on time and expensive when I have used them. The Montpellier Taxi also charge from their taxi offices not the pickup point - what a rip off ! If you do not walk then consider hiring a car as it will be cheaper than a Montpellier taxi.

If I paid the full rack rate at this hotel I would cry as this hotel is on the tired and dated side. The lift/corridors/rooms are all in need of a refit/uplift to command its full rack rate prices. It always amuses me that the front glass door has a big crack in it and never been replaced since I have started staying here over the years. My basin was cracked too.

That said, I had restful sleep and comfortable nights. The bed was comfortable and despite the decor worn and damaged the room was clean. I was very impressed with the wifi too - I streamed videos over it with no problems.

The hotel is also directly opposite where the Airport bus stop starts and finishes - so very handy.

I would return to this hotel as it is convenient and taxi free to where I do business and every time I return I keep saying I must try something different ! I never do though as the staff are always fantastic to me and make my stay!

The Mercure Montpellier Antigone is just across the street from where the airport shuttle stops at, in this respect it is very convenient. It is located close to Place de L'europe which is a 3 minute walk away. The old town is a 20 minute walk, or catch the L1 tram into the center (around 10 minutes).

The actual hotel was quite nice, though my room got quite unbearably hot and stuffy mid May. Outside temperatures were around 15-20C but it was too hot to sleep properly even without blankets. The air con was not adjustable for temperature and even though the windows open, it is quite noisy outside with the traffic so I could not keep it open at night.

Breakfast buffet spreads were quite good for €16. There are plenty of breads, cereals, fruit, scrambled eggs, sausages etc. There's not many cafes open early in the morning so this option was best for me.

Wifi worked consistently well throughout the hotel, it was fast and never dropped out.

My family organized a major anniversary celebration and chose the Mercure to host the main dinner for a party of 54. From A to Z the Mercure personnel was very competent and kind in every detail.
it was a pleasure dealing with Mrs Joelle Muller and her staff. We would recommend the Mercure both for the excellence of its cuisine (the veal from Aveyron was outstanding) and the diligence of its staff.

Stayed only 1 night on the way back from l'Aveyron. We go often enough to see that the quality is constant. Nice room with all the bits & bobs necessary for a good stay. Lovely breakfast. (not always the case in France!). Will go back next time as it is the only good Mercure in the town.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

I stayed in this hotel for a couple of nights recently and still wondering where all those glowing reviews are coming from...

Lets put the things straight-it's 2013 now and this is not a 4 star property, in fact there is only one thing which is 4 star-the price, wide screen LG which appeared to have been put in the room fairly recently is only 3 and 1/2, sorry :). The hotel décor firmly stuck in mid 90's and within a year or so will be screaming for a refurbishment or else downgrading to 3 stars.

I had to ask to change the first room which was allocated to me as there was no shower screen. Responding to my comment "so water will be leaking on the bath floor" receptionist readily agreed -"yes, it will"... I was when offered another room which luckily did benefit from a shower screen.

Water taps in both sink and bath were also very old and lost their chrome and shine a long time ago. There was also a rather large water mark on the ceiling in bathroom (see photos). The entrance door to the room again looked rather old.
Bed was too hard for me and every morning my back was aching, this said of cause other guests may find the mattress to be quite OK.

Apart from having an old feeling to it the hotel appeared to be clean and well looked after.

While hotel employees (I only came in contact with those at the reception) were fairly kind and friendly in general I felt that what also put the hotel down was the apparent lack or customer service training of its employees.

When I arrived to the hotel there was hardly any welcome or introduction to the hotel (no information on restaurant location and breakfast hours, services hotel offers etc)-instead I was immediately requested to provide credit card details. Even though I explained twice that the accommodation was paid for in full and I was not going to use mini bar a receptionist stubbornly insisted on the card-OK, perhaps the majority of guests in this hotel happen to be dishonest people and there is no reason whatsoever to trust customers who just paid a custom to your place...

Furthermore on my last day I asked a manager at the reception to provide information on how to get to the nearest beach-after he gave a brief explanation I queried whether the information I was given was accurate as a day before another employee advised me that I had to take a different route. The manager appeared to be not very happy at the request (commenting that all tram lines are clearly marked on the map) and did confirm the direction he gave. As I learned later he sent me in a completely wrong direction and instead of walking to a nearby tram stop (around 5 min) I ended up making a rather large loop going to a railway station which took 25 min.

To help others who decide to explore local beaches and to avoid the same mistake I did by listening to a manager on duty-don't take the road leading towards central Montpelier/Antigon shopping centre. Instead once exit the hotel go straight (the same direction as if you were heading to airport bus stop). Continue past first tram stop to the second where you can catch a green line tram towards beaches (the journey takes about 15 min and then you can either walk (15-30 min depending on the part of the seaside resort you want to get to) or take a shuttle bus.

Location wise the hotel is conveniently located just outside city centre (around 10 mins pleasant walk), airport bus shuttle stops just across the road which is very convenient and will get you to airport in about 10 min.

Main railway station is approximately 20-25 min walking or a couple of stops ride on a tram which stops near to the hotel.

To summarise the hotel would be fine if they didn't advertise it as a 4star property and the price was relevant to the level of service offered.

As mentioned before they would also do well with having some training on customer care.

Breakfast was nothing exceptional but the food was fresh and adequate (my only gripe would be pancakes which looked as though they have been kept in a warming pan for the past few days, very hard texture and were repeatedly re-heated).

There is nothing horrible or bad about this hotel and it's OK to sleep over for a couple of nights and to be used as a base for visiting nearby towns (Avignon (1 hour 08 min by train (convenient but not cheap at Euro 33.40 a day return ticket) and Nimes (35mins) are definitely worth a visit) just don't expect that you are going to stay in a proper 4 star property. btw Montpelier also proved to be a nice city to spend a day or two with charming and compact centre containing interesting medieval quarter and number of imposing monuments and historic landmarks.
