“Be in a fairy tale”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2013

Excellent castle with a little town. You fill like been in a fairy tale. Of course very crowded during August. Best visit after 1.30 pm, because before even the parkings are foul.

“A bucket list place!”

A must visit if you are anywhere within 500k's! The restoration workds have been excellent and sympathetic. Touristy, yes, but worthwhile anyway.

“Largest Surviving Walled City in Europe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2013

The Cité of Carcassonne is a rare survival, showing what thousands of cities looked like in the Middle Ages.

Like many it sits on a hill near a river (the Aude). It has a double ring of defensive city walls, the inner one very old, the outer one built after the region was annexed to France in the thirteenth century. Serious visitors are to be found in the "lists" between the walls. Most visitors head straight for the interior, where they see little except tourist shops. Access is free.

Inside the cité is the "Chateau Comtal", a very impressive castle built against the interior city walls by the Trencavel family, nobles owing allegiance to the King of Aragon, and Cathar sympathisers, who were dispossessed in 1209 during the Cathar Crusade. You can visit it for a fee, which covers a guided tour - almost all are in French, very few in English.

For more on this specacular World Heritage Site see http://www.midi-france.info/030101_carcassonne.htm

Also within the Cite, a short walk away, is the Basilica of St-Nazaire. (Entry free)

Castle aficionados will appreciate finding no fewer than five spectacular barbicans, four outside, one inside.

“Worth visiting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

We decided to stop off in Carcassonne on our way from Spain to italy and were lucky enough to be able to find a room in a hotel within the city walls.
Perhaps the best way to see it is from afar, as you can really get a feeeling of how imposing it is. Once within the walls, it is a maze of streets, shops and people! IAlthough it is too touristic, as there are shops trying to sell you everything and anything, the sheer beauty of the place compensates for that. The castle is really interesting, and I recommend watching the short documentary that you can see at the beginning of the tour as it gives you an understanding of the place.
If you don't like crowds it isn't the place for you, but it really is worth visiting.
