A Lotto train does a trip round the ramparts. This was well worth the time and money. In addition to getting a bit of the history (in French) we got a number of very good photos from vantage points that you would not otherwise get. They told us that the city of the Cathars was under siege . They filled their last pig with food, cut open the stomach and threw it over the wall. The enemy thought that if they could throw a we-fed pig away the city must be full of food, so they left off the siege. Whereupon they sounded the bells. Carcasse + sonner = Carcassonne.

We stayed in a great Gite in Salsigne and explored the whole area visiting as many castles as we could fit in. A perfect week.
Fabulously atmospheric structures and landscapes; perched on steep hillsides, reached by winding roads, complete with hairpin turns and drops. Great views too.
