Carcassonne is actually two cities. The magnificent Walled, Medieval City which overlooks the lower city called The Bastide. It takes about 20 minutes to walk up to the medieval city from The Bastide. Carcassonne Guest House has a gorgeous view of the medieval city from its terrace, where guests are served breakfast in the morning (weather permitting) or can simply relax after a long day of touring. The walk from the train station to the Guest House takes about 15-20 minutes, straight through the middle of the The Bastide. My room was spotlessly clean and a pleasure to return to in the evenings. The owner, Patrick, seems to have a knack for knowing exactly what to say and do to make one feel at home. For travelers who would like to do some wine tasting, head directly to La Coté Ferme, where they have about 15-20 regional wines available for tasting, along with wonderfully prepared food from the area. Patrick can give you directions.
