“Narrowboat on the Canal du Midi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2009

Excellent time. Highly recommended.
We hired a narrowboat from Minervois Cruisers at La Someil - very good service. Boat was in good repair (those from some other companies did not seem so good).
We hired bikes, which was a real advantage as it allowed us to explore around the canal (as well as get fresh bread in the morning!).
Take gardening gloves and old clothes to handle the ropes - the toilets on all the boats empty straight into the canal, there was no smell but the thought made us rather obsessive at hand washing.
If you are getting a bigger boat make sure that it has bow thrusters (wasn't relevant for the narrow boats, but we saw some people struggling).
Last top tip - don't plan to go too far. It is much better just to chug along and tie up away from the villages (you can tie up anywhere on the canal - use the tree roots as secure anchoring points).

“Fabulous trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2009

Went for one week with Nicols, six ladies on board 1000 series boat, the weather was brilliant, 30degrees in August. Boat was spotless and the people at the base took us to the supermarket for us to stock up on whatever we needed to get started, tea, coffee etc. Only one of us had boat experience, something you would definitely need just a little of, knowing how to tie up boats is of great benefit. The boats don't go very fast, so don't think your going to travel too much in the week, but thats the whole idea, relax, read a book, take in the sun. There is cycle paths the whole way along the river so you can hire bikes when getting you boat for this use. Make sure you check the bikes beforehand, out of the five we had two were unusable and the other three could do with pumping the tyres. Wineries, restaurants etc are the whole way along and they are fabulous, I never once had a bad meal. The locks are a little bit stressful, once you get the hang of it, they are not too bad. Just try and not let the rope fall in the water!!!

“Minervois Cruisers - a stylish way of seeing the Canal du Midi!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2009

Just come back from a week on the Canal du Midi in a barge hired from Minervois Cruisers. The boat was very clean, very well equipped and very different to many of the other boats on the canal. The Minervois Cruisers team both in the UK and in La Somail were extremely helpful in assisting us with our route planning and also in organising taxis to and from the airport - as well as being extremely understanding when we lost a bike off the roof...low-hanging branches...Highly recommend them.

Top tips: tie your bike to the roof, stock up on cash as ATMs are hard to find and the cafes and shops along the Canal du Midi are eye-wateringly expensive, sailing gloves for manhandling ropes as you go in and out of locks and wear a pair of shorts that you don't mind getting utterly filthy manhandling the ropes!

“Minervois Cruisers on the Canal du Midi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2009

We have just returned from a week cruising on a narrowboat on the Canal du Midi. Absolutely delightful. The canal is beautiful, plenty of tiny rural villages to explore en route and no problems mooring wherever and whenever.
We hired the boat from Minervois cruisers who were extremely helpful and went beyond expectations in the quality of the boat, the friendliness of the staff and flexibility when we hit problems with French national holidays and lack of public transport.
Well worth visiting the area. The French are very friendly and the croissants are something else!

“Crusing on the canal du midi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2008

We rented an 8 berth boat from Connoissuer Cruisers in September.
We picked the boat because it had 4 en-suite bathrooms.
The boat was in good condition - although not new.
The fixtures and fittings sufficient - but the bedrooms were very small.
These big boats are not easy to drive at first. The instruction was as full as it reasonably could be. Only practice will really work. Fortunately one of our party quckly picked it up and hogged the controls for the rest of the week!
Likewise locks are an issue. Downstream locks are much easier - so make sure your route is not exlusively up-stream. You really need 5 or 6 people in the party to make this enjoyable rather than stressful!
Having said all this the canal is a fantastic amenity in a beautiful area. We travelled from Trebes to Carcassonne and then downstream via the Canal du Robin to Narbonne. Accompanied by glorious autumn weather. Homps and La Somail were two of our favourite places. Carcassonne is an absolute must.
We got the train from Narbonne to Toulouse for our flight home. The left luggage facility at Toulouse has reopened so we were able to spend a relaxed afternoon in the city.
So - if you are prepared to put up with a little bit of discomfort and to travel with a like-minded group, this is a great holiday.
