After reading the Tripadvisor reviews we had high expectations for Au Petit Sud Ouest, and it definitely lived up to them. The first thing to say is that the location is magical - around the corner from the Eiffel Tower, and Invalides, it's worth just taking a stroll around here before and after the meal, and this restaurant is the perfect excuse to visit this neighbourhood at night. Second, the restaurant itself has a wonderful welcoming and homey feel to it, and as soon as you walk in the door the owners are ready to greet you with a smile. I've been studying French for some years now and I was especially delighted that they humoured me and spoke French with me. There is nowhere else in Paris I have felt less self concious of trying to speak the language.
Now to the important part - the food! While I've always loved duck, I had never tried foie gras before coming to Au Petit Sud Ouest, and so we decided to go with the classic foie gras with sea salt and toast. Each table has its own toaster, with special wooden prongs for removing the toast, which made it feel like a whole new experience. The foie gras itself was incredibly rich and filling, and we took our time with it.
Incidentally, for those who are foie gras experts, it seems the menu has plenty of variety for the more experienced diner.
For our main course we chose the classic confit duck leg with mushrooms and potatoes. This was absolutely delicious. The mushrooms in particular - don't miss out on them. The whole main course was just simply done, good food. With ingredients this good, it didn't need any embellishments. Again, we kept it simple but the menu at Au Petit Sud Ouest has plenty of choice for anyone looking to be more adventurous. Maybe when we're back next time we'll branch out and try something different!
For dessert we chose creme brulee - the pistachio flavoured version was amazing.
The wine list has something for everyone - we went with an inexpensive red wine, which was recommended to us by the owner Chantal, who looked after us extremely well all evening.
Overall - delicious, reasonably priced, a fantastic experience.
