“Arrrange wake-up call!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

We stayed here our first night in Paris, using Points, before moving to our final destination. We arrived at about noon. My friend's plane arrived before mine and she had a 50-lb suitcase, so she took a taxi from CDG, which cost 60 euros ($80). I had studied up on public transportation options and had one suitcase that was just one size up from carry-on. I took the train (RER) into the city, and transferred (for no additional cost) to the metro. I popped out at the Riquet station and asked a woman, "Ou se trouve la canal?" She got me oriented, and I rolled my suitcase 0.15 mile (according to Geodistance.com) to the canal, and spied the hotel a block up. (I had looked at pictures before leaving the U.S. so I would recognize it.) Total cost: about $10.

The front desk staff at the Holiday Inn Express speak excellent English (I noticed one young man's American accent -- he is from Guam), but they humored me while I delivered the little French speech I had rehearsed on the plane over ("I know it is not 2 o'clock. I want to take a walk. Will you permit me to leave the suitcase?").

Keep in mind that this is a "green" hotel. You need to activate the lights in the room with your keycard (the slot is on the wall just inside the door), so that you don't leave lights a-blazing when you leave the room. As noted by another TripAdvisor, the corridors are dim, also, I assume, to save energy.

The elevators are glass, and children will get a kick out of that. Heck, we got a kick out of it, and we're middle-aged!

I did not heed the advice of another TripAdvisor to arrange a wake-up call, and I slept until 10:30 a.m. I leapt up, woke up my friend, and we hustled down to breakfast, which ends at 11 a.m. No other traveler was there, and I made my apologies to the staff the only way I knew, by saying, "Dormir!" and they seemed to catch my meaning. You can conclude that any or all of the following are true: a) we had been tired b) the beds are comfortable c) the hotel is quiet. We then dashed back upstairs to shower and pack and get out by the noon check-out, giving the same explanation to the front desk ("Dormir!"). They called a taxi for us. Another TripAdvisor had given a heads-up that taxis turn on their meters when they get the call, before they arrive to pick you up, and indeed the meter already showed 8 euros when we got in. It was 23 euros by the time we got to our next hotel, near the Louvre. (If my friend had not had a heavy suitcase, we could have taken the metro to our next hotel, for 1.75 euros each.)

An aside: Every day for a week we took the metro and walked. All of the Parisians of whom we asked directions were helpful. The only grouchy Parisian I met was the one and only taxi driver I had to deal with. Advice: Pack light and take the metro.

We were with three, the room was to small.
For WiFi you need to pay and you can only use it in the lobby.
There is no closet !!
We were on the fifth floor and could hear everything from outside loud and clear.
Thow the breakfast with limited choice was nice, the shower two and the view off our room was lovely.
The staff is good to.

Dear Madam,
Thank you for taking the time to share your last experience in our Hotel. We notice that despite some negative remarks, you had a pleasant stay at the Canal de La Villette.
Concerning the wifi, there is a password which is for free and valuable for 3 hours anywhere in the hotel (in your room as well). So I am realy sorry if when you checked-in there was a misunderstanding concerning the information about the wifi access.
For the size of the room, could you please remind us what was your room number ? Thus, for your future reservation, we will do all the necessary to avoid such a kind of disappointment. However, you spotted the main advantages of our hotel : the ideal location, the neighbourhood and the staff.
So, we would be glad to welcome you again at the Canal de la Villette very soon.
Best regards,
Manuel Lubin

Just returned from a five night stay in this hotel. For a HIE it was a great experience. Friendly, attentive staff and breakfast was great with fresh espresso available every morning. We had a room overlooking the canal. The metro is 2 minutes away and a 20 min walk to Gare de Nore. The cafe/restaurant opposite the hotel is family run amazing atmosphere, friendly and wonderful food at very reasonable prices. The area was great to be based in. Next trip to Paris we will be staying at this hotel much better than being based nearer the centre.

Room Tip: Ask for one with canal view

Just back from 3 nights here. The hotel is what you would expect of a HIE - clean, modern, decent breakfast and friendly staff.

The area the hotel is in is residential and very close to the metro. I would recommend the Crimee station as opposed to Riquet and the walk is nicer and definitely better for late at night. There are a few patisseries, restaurants, etc. all close by to the hotel. Don't be put off by how many metro stations you will need to pass through to get to the Louvre or wherever - the stations are very close together, certainly far closer together than on the London Underground.

My only niggles with this hotel were that there was some mildew on the ceiling of the bathroom, we were left without milk and plastic cups one night and had to go down to reception and the corridor lighting - they have lights that come on when you walk past the sensors, however, they only appear to work one way, so you come out of your room and walk along a dark corridor, lit only by emergency lighting, as you walk past the sensor, the lights BEHIND you switch on!

The rooms appear to be sound proofed, so no being woken up by doors slamming! Bliss!

This HIE is as others have stated is very good indeed, far superior to some HIE in the UK but not quite as good as some in the USA. However, for Paris it rates an EXCELLENT, as most Paris hotels come with small rooms at a high cost and breakfast not included. This is just the opposite, we had two rooms for four nights overlooking the canal (ask for this when booking), at a very reasonable price, which included a superb hot & cold buffet breakfast. The rooms were very spacious, clean, fresh and sparkling and the beds very comfortable. There are tea and coffee making facilities but no fridge or micro and no pool or leisure facilities. The staff are all very helpful and accomodating and speak good english. There are several Metro stations within easy walking distance of the hotel also buses close by, so although not in the centre of Paris, it is very easy to get to all of the tourist attractions and to be honest Paris is such a huge city that where ever you stay, you will need to travel to get from one place to another. A 3 day metro pass is very good value for this as you can use it on the Metro or the bus. Back to the Hotel, our only gripe here, as with many hotels these days, is the room lighting, so many as here, are opting for eco lighting which really is not good enough for reading by, certainly not when it is dark by 6pm and still dark at 7am. Also, the cost of using wi-fi is pretty steep here and we consider that charging for wi-fi -by any hotel- is unacceptable in this day and age. There are several good value restaurants close by, especially worth a mention is Cafe OK, which is opposite the back of the Hotel across the canal, by the side of the university accommodation. They serve excellent food at a very reasonable price and the restaurant overlooks the canal. We also ate at the excellent Le Cree adjoining the hotel, which is mainly a fish restaurant, though you can get a steak and they were most accomodating to our vegetarian friend, it is however more expensive than others nearby. Some previous reviewers have mentioned that they did not feel safe in this area, we all felt much safer here than in central Paris, as it is much quieter: and to our American friends we certainly felt much safer than some major cities in the USA especially Atlanta. When we return to Paris we will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the Hotel overlooking the Canal and if you are prepared to spend a lit...

I just loved staying at this hotel. The building is quite new and the view was just amazing. I really enjoyed the idea of staying quite near of the Quai de la Seine.
The hotel staff was very helpfull and very friendly. They really made my stay in Paris even more unforgetable.
The breakfast is just amazing for a Holiday Inn Express. If you don't mind staying a little far away from downtown I definitely recommend this hotel. You will be in Paris there is a subway station everywhere!

Room Tip: Don't miss out the breakfast!

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights in October 2012 and had a lovely big room, with balcony, overlooking the canal. Unfortunately the weather meant that we could only use the balcony once but it came in handy for keeping drinks cool! The lounge and bar area is very pleasant and the staff more than helpful. The breakfast, as others have said, is good and plentiful and we never had a problem finding a table. Close to the metro (we bought a 3-day pass so we didn't have to fiddle with machines each time we wanted to use the trains) and about a 30-minute walk from the Gare du Nord (for those of you catching Eurostar). Some good supermarkets close by and a couple of fun neighbourhood bars. Never had a language problem.
