Arpege is everything one could hope for, and much, much more. Yes, it is astronomically expensive and it's difficult to imagine being able to go more than once in a lifetime at these prices, but my advice is to start saving now for a peak experience.
We wisely opted for lunch which with wine and service, still came to more than $800. What wine, and what food. Food made for angels!
The prix fixe meal focused on vegetarian dishes and you can imagine my dismay when my husband noted that all but two or three of the courses included beets (it is after all winter, and they serve seasonally available produce). My husband detests beets, to the point to making him ill, but these were no ordinary beet dishes. He ate every single course and nary a complaint, but many words of praise.
Yes, it is ruinously expensive, and yes, it leaves one feeling guilty. Still, lunch at Arpege was an experience to relish forever.
PS They provide a lovely souvenir in the form of a folding knife. Be VERY careful!!! It is razor sharp. I ended up in the emergency room having stitches put in my thumb on the last evening in Paris - not a peak experience.....!
