“Average food, but nice atmosphere and excellent value.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2012 via mobile

Went there tonight with my father, had a very nice time. The place has a certain early 20th century Zola feel, and it's definitely an experience.

However, a few things you should know :
- You WILL have strangers sharing your table (and there is not separation or anything, it's elbow to elbow), and we had the opportunity of meeting two very nice women (US). It's definitely a great way to naturally socialize with people from around the world! Yet many were surprised when the waiter showed them their table (as in "well... Isn't that table taken ? I mean do you expect us to sit with people I absolutely don't know ?"), so avoid if you want some privacy or want to avoid noise.

- I'm French, live in Paris, and I have to say the food is not bad but it's average, don't go there to taste true French cuisine

- Service was good, the order was taken fast and the dishes came in quickly, yet there was no rush whatsoever throughout the dinner, definitely a good point.

- Excellent value. As in : two dishes (duck), wine, water, bread, and two desserts for 30€. Unbelievable prices for Paris!

All in all, great atmosphere, worth visiting not for the food but for the place (not suitable for a date or anything formal) ! I guess you either hate it (if you want your own table), or love it (for the meet-your-fellow diner lottery).

“Lovely establishment, horrible food and waiter!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2012

We waited in line and were disappointed after reading the reviews. The food was cafeteria style and the waiter did his best to exploit and rip us off. We were the only table that paid for water, all others were served "table water". We watched the waiter take uneaten bread from a table that was leaving add it to another basket of old bread with unwashed hands and serve it to new patrons- completely unexcusable in my opinion and disgusting. The waiter was rude and the lamb was not even edible (waaaaay over cooked)!! I would say skip it. Don't be fooled by the long line- IT IS NOT GOOD!

“Quality food, quality service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012

We were a party of six and turned up at the restaurant at a busy period and had to wait in a queue for about 20 minutes. When we got to our table, we were given recommendations by thw waiter on food and drink and took his advice. The wine was not expensive and was brilliant. The food arrived extemely quickly and was the best I've tasted for a long time. All in all, this was an excellent choice in restaurant.

“An Atmospheric 19th Century Cafeteria”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012

Treat it like the cafeteria it is and you won't be disappointed. Enjoy the magnificent surroundings and the quirks of the establishment: if your party is 2 people then you can expect to share your table with another couple; your busy waiter or waitress will keep a handwritten note of your order on the tablecloth and then tot it up manually at the end. You can enjoy good value steak and chips with perfectly potable house wine.

“So so”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2012

This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend from France.
I really liked the style of the restaurant. We were really surprised though when our food arrived about 10 minutes after we had ordered. It was obviously just microwaved and it wasn't even hot. Nevertheless the calves head I ordered was very good. As was the steak. The vegetarian meal and the spaghetti were lacking. We decided to have dessert and had the creme de marron. It was very sweet but good.
All in all it was quite cheap food that was okay. But I'm not sure if I'll return.
