While it is unfortunate that the traveler from Kitchener had a not so pleasant stay here, I can see where perhaps the Cronstadt could swing either way for a person, which was kind of what I meant by “not the best choice/ high maintenance travelers”. And I don’t mean that negatively at all.
High maintenance referring to things like linen changing… towel changing…. Breakfast in bed…. Having tickets ordered…. cars ordered…..
That being said, I do believe a few things should be pointed out….

-Perhaps the room/hotel was in the process of renovations…? Your stay was two and a half years ago. Did you request a different room and were denied?
I honestly snooped about and saw nothing of disrepair. No it isn’t the Ritz, or even a Best Western, or an Ibis… but it IS a small 2 star hotel in Paris!

-I suspect a lot of places DO NOT change the sheets daily in Europe. It is a filthy waste of energy and water. Do you change your sheets each morning at home?

- I had (mentioned) hanger issues too…. But I have been in enough hotels around Europe to sort of expect that, same for towel issue. I also asked about and got the same issues from many other travelers. Guess things are a bit different on different Continents.
But, the kicker is did you request an extra towel from the front desk and were denied? I wanted an extra blanket and North American style pillow…. And they were delighted to comply.

- And in regards to the shout out for the Langlois, I have to say, I did look longingly at this hotel, BUT
1. Either the prices have changed drastically from 2002 to 2005.
2. Maybe the prices are really different for a double room…
-Or-
3. Your idea of a few dollars more is VASTLY different than mine!

I paid 896.00 CDN for 10 nights at the Cronstadt. That converted into the Euro comes to the tune of about 60.00 Euros per night.
As opposed to the Langlois who offered me the rate of 96.00 Euros per night…
I don’t know but saving the 530.00 CDN dollars difference is more than a “few dollars” to me….
And I confess I totally enjoyed spending it on frivolous things like wine, beer AND bottled water at EVERY meal. Pain aux chocolet daily and expensive Parisian treats whenever I darn well felt like it!
Here’s hoping it didn’t fully muck up your vacation.

My daughter and I stayed here for a week in July 2002 and it was the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. There was no real door on the bathroom, just a sheet of plywood on hinges without even a latch. Linen was never changed in the entire week. They would only give us one large towel per day even though there were two adults in the room.

The armoir had only 5 hangers of which 3 were broken in on way or another but worst of all the ceiling was covered in shrink plastic wrap the kind you seal windows with. Obviously something was falling from the ceiling and this was the cheap way of covering it up.

For very little more you can stay at the Langlois up the street so only stay here if you can't sleep on the street.

The Cronstadt is quaint, small hotel full of Paris "charm". Though
most of the staff does not speak English, they were delightful,
of course it doesn't hurt that I have a fondness for French men and it
appears they, for Canadian women!
There is even a little fountain in the foyer, and courtyard garden out
back.
Lovely area, not busy and not at ALL touristy! Actually, I don't think I
saw more than four people with guidebooks in the neighborhood the whole
trip! And with two metro stops to choose from, one on Line 7 (Cadet) and the
other 12, (N.D. Lorette) you can get pretty much anywhere you want Paris in 20
minutes. Unless of course you get lost or sidetracked after leaving the
station.
Befriend the Metro!

My room was on the top floor, back side, with a little Napoleon balcony
like I had hoped! I looked out at a jumble of local windows! Maybe not
the showy view the average tourist wants, but I like the local city
feel.
It was small, but big enough to have a little desk, chair and wardrobe.
Thank goodness I have ample training for teensy bathrooms and small
quarters from working on the cruise ship! Not many hangers though?!

The bathrooms are brand new.... at least the ones on the sixth floor
that I sneaked a peak into are. New sink, new tile,
new shower, new toilet. The "double, with bath" next to my single room
had a very large tub, and a spacious room.
The hallways and creaky stairs are slightly lopsided, and the lift can
fit 3 humans no baggage, or 1 human with baggage, and breakfast room
...well, in a word narrow. Not for making one feel thin.... worse later
(therefore busier) in the morning.
Coffee was GOOD, and croissants fresh, and, depending on who was serving
(attentive Monsieur, or indifferent Madame) either plentiful
and time consuming, or one person = one serving = on your way. Each
with pro's and con's and always perfect!

Maybe not the best choice for older, higher maintenance travelers, or
for those not used to large cities. It is definitely urban downtown.
Directly across the street from an elementary school so is very quiet at
night, with the exception of a few LOCAL cafes and brasseries.
Of course the Grand Blvd.'s and The Opera are VERY close, and Montmartre
was in walking (uphill) distance, so if you needed English menus and
Starbucks you can have that as well, but the immediate surroundings at
The Cronstadt, are exceptionally crowd/tourist free!

LOCATION.... I know...... I too was hesitant about it at first, I really wanted to stay in the Marais, or in the 7th...but honestly, with metro Cadet, and N.D. de Lorette. The Cronstadt was ideal for me, not even a hassle to swing back by the room mid day-ish to drop off newly acquired treasures!
Loved this location, will stay here again, hopefully sooner than later.
