I am writing to let you know about a horrible experience that the seven of us had at the Hotel Unic Renoir in Paris, France. We reserved our booking through Hotels.com. We checked in on Friday, September 15, 2006. The staff seemed pleasant and the rooms were very small, but clean. One clerk in particular, was very friendly and offered several times to schedule a taxi pick-up for the seven of us on the morning of September 18 when we were leaving. He said that we should pay him 49 euros and give the taxi driver no more than 70 euros. We thanked him repeatedly and explained that we already had arrangements secured with the same taxi driver that had picked us up from the airport. On the morning of September 18, 2006 we were scheduled to leave the hotel at 6:15am. The clerk knew this. The taxi driver arrived on time to take us to the airport and as we attempted to check out that morning we came into the lobby to drop off our room cards and Murdot told us that we could not leave until we paid the taxes for the three rooms we had stayed in. I explained to him that we had booked through Hotels.com and that we had already paid the taxes and were paid in full. He became irate, started screaming, and demanded that we pay him cash before allowing us to leave. He also claimed that my parent’s room had several charges for beverages that were taken out of the room refrigerator. My mother actually went back up to the room and brought down all the items in the fridge to show that they were all still there and told him that they had not taken any on any of the previous days. The clerk refused to accept this and locked the doors to the hotel and would not allow us to leave until we paid him cash. He knew that we were on a schedule and that the taxi was waiting to take all seven of us to the airport and used this to extort money from us. I was able to reach a representative from hotels.com once I was in the taxi. I explained what had just happened and the representative placed me on hold so he could contact the hotel directly. The clerk answered and pretended that he did not speak enough English to understand what the Hotels.com agent was saying to him. Oddly enough, the clerk spoke perfect English while we were staying at the Hotel Unic Renoir. It was a horrifying experience. We are decent, honest people. I have never felt so manipulated and extorted in my life. It left all of us with a horrible feeling about France and a negative final imprint about our trip there. When we arrived back in the states, I contacted Hotels.com and told us that they would credit our account for the cash that was paid out to the clerk. We appreciated this.
