“Cheap & Cheerful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

Had a lovely stay in Paris at Hotel Du Lion. Room was a nice size, with three large windows, which was good, we even had a slight view of the Eiffel Tower! In a good location, just a short stroll to Montparnasse, and a metro right outside the door. Definitely will be staying here the next time we're in Paris.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights because it was convenient to the bus to Orly Airport (the depot was just across the road). The hotel is above a very busy restaurant, which is a popular spot after work for people to gather at the tables on the footpath, so initially we were concerned about the noise from there. However, the windows were double-glazed and kept the room quiet. There is free WIFI and the beds and bathroom were fine. Only drawback is that there is no lift up to the 1st floor to the hotel reception so you have to carry your suitcases up that far. Once on the 1st floor there is a small lift to the upper floors. There is no lobby to speak of - only a small reception desk, and a place for breakfast. We didn't have breakfast there as there were plenty of places to eat nearby including a McDonalds next door which was fine for coffee.
Location is great with a market street opposite selling all types of high quality food. The entrance to the Catacombs is adjacent. A lovely wine merchant recommended a reasonably priced wine and removed the cork for us to take back to our hotel room. I'd stay there again if we needed to leave early for Orly Airport.

I stayed at this hotel in September 2012 and was very pleased by the experience. The neighborhood is beyond lovely, really Parisian and almost surreal. There are parks, lovely buildings with Victorian architecture, two bakeries, a supermarket, a pharmacy, restaurants, McDonald's, a Zara and many others. I was quite surprised of the variety of options in the neighborhood.

The hotel is near every means of transport linking it to the city center: metro, RER and bus. The hotel is situated approximately on the corner of Avenue du General Leclerc, with a metro station right in front. The Denfert-Rochereau metro/RER stations are directly connected to the Eiffel Tower, Invalides and Chatelet. Also, you can reach Jardin du Luxembourg easily in 10 to 15 minutes on foot and the latin quarter in 30-35 minutes.

The entrance is not easily noticeable since it's just a black door near the restaurant on the corner, but don't be fooled, what lies inside is a totally different story. The only disadvantage if the flight of stairs to the reception which doesn't have a lift or anything so you have to carry your luggage. Otherwise, there is a lift which takes 3 people at once.

The room was small but for Parisian standards very good. We had a corner room and had a view of the Montparnasse Tower and the Eiffel Tower with a small balcony. The bathroom was very clean and didn't have any defects, there was central heating which proved in handy for the cold nights of late September. We had a desk, wardrobe with hangers, a flat-screen TV and everything was kept very tidy every day by the cleaning staff. The room wasn't noisy at all, only a bit chilly in the morning.

We didn't eat at the hotel since the price of breakfast was 9 euros and it wasn't too consistent. Instead we ate at the bakery next door. Even though we didn't have a fridge in the room, the receptionist was very nice and kept our food in the hotel fridge when we needed it.

Also, the manager was very nice, he gave us a map and instructions and told us, according to the schedule of the attractions, where to go first and what transportation to take, so we would see most of Paris.

I would stay here again in a heartbeat. I highly recommend the area and the hotel!

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floors have a better view and I assume are not noisy. Rooms on the corner have the...

This hotel is conveniently located in a real parisian neighborhood at Denfert-Rochereau metro/RER stations. By foot, it takes 15 minutes to reach Jardin du Luxembourg and about 30 minutes to reach the Seine and Ile de la Cité. My room had been renovated, was clean and very well soundproofed (the only downside is that you have to shower in a bathtub and there is no curtain). The breakfast was very good (breads, croissants, jam, yoghurt, cereal, orange juice and coffee) and is served in a room filled with the natural light. But most of all, the staff was very welcoming, friendly and helpful. A real gem for Paris. I highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: My room on the sixth floor had french doors opening on a tiny balcony and offered a view of Tour Mon...

Small room, no AC. Standing shower too small you will bump into the walls. Housekeeper doesn't know what DND means, even if you leave it outside your door, they will still enter the room. There's a steep staircase going to the tiny lobby, so imagine if you are a lady carrying a heavy suitcase! I also cant understand why you have to leave your room key to the front desk eveytime you go out. My advise, stay outside the city and go for the branded ones, room rate will be the same but you'll get back what you paid for.

We stayed here at the same time last year, and were well impressed, came back again this year and brought some friends too. We had room 42. The hotel is basic, and clean, and you have to negotiate the steps at the front of the hotel, but that's about it - it's in a great location by the RER and metro, right in the thick of the hustle and bustle of Paris - yes it's noisy but the sound proofing is great, and a decent sized room and good value for money for the price, especially as Paris standards go ( and I've stayed in a lot worse for a lot more) - hopefully we will be back again next year......
