“Sleeping on a David Lynch set”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

If you are looking for something different, Alba certainly has it. The decor in my room (the suite on the top floor, no. 61) mixed deep velvet red with black leather and metal chains. It felt like sleeping in a David Lynch film, which, depending on your appetite for bad dreams could be seen positively or negatively, but the interior design certainly does not leave one untouched, which in the world of bland chain hotels and and non-experiences is refreshing.

A quirky cheaper hotel, well located close to the Gare du Nord, and some nice restaurants and cafes. Friendly reception and staff, decent breakfast, but slightly dated rooms with faded decor. Our trip coincided with a Paris heat wave and the lack of air conditioning was sorely felt. Also, because of the heat, the windows had to be kept open, and the nights sleep was disturbed by the rowdiness of the corner Cuban bar. Also I really do not like mouldy shower curtains! But good value and position.

We recently stayed at the Hotel Alba Opera during a "romantic" holiday in Paris, and the hotel made the holiday that much more special. We were given room 61 which is at the top of the hotel and looks across rather than over a inner courtyard. This means there is close to no noise from outside, and despite other comments about this hotel, very little noise from the hotel.
Room 61 is a suite and has plenty of room, and not just from a "Paris point of view", it really is a big space. The bed area is separated from a sitting area by a sexy (and a little kinky) metal hanging screen (see photo). It visually divides the room but that's all. The room also has a good sized bathroom (including bidet) and a small dressing room. While quite small, it was perfect for luggage and sorting clothes. There is also a kettle and mugs supplied, although no tea/coffee supplies. Personally, this doesn't worry me, I would rather carry/buy my favorite instant and pick up some milk if needed (there are 2-3 supermarkets within 300m).
The Alba Opera also has one of the best local area information compendiums I have seen for a long while, and combined with the knowledge of the staff, Paris is at your feet.
The local area is clean and safe, plenty of eating options (including one of the best coffee cafe's in Paris, just round the corner at the KB cafe - great breakfast as well), great transport options and an easy walk to anywhere.
If you are after a special romantic Paris experience, try for room 61 and viva-la-romance.
A note on the lift - its not that small. I easily fit with the luggage (an international size case) and I am a 181cm man. It is a work of art and needs to be tried and enjoyed.
This is one of the most unique hotels I have ever been to and deserving of the Excellent tag.

Room Tip: The location means there is very little street noise, but this is Paris and people stay up late ! J...

I found this place last year & like it so much that I don't think there's any point staying anywhere else in Paris. It's an attractive hotel with characterful rooms, reasonable prices and excellent service. The rooms aren't tiny like many in Paris are. There are excellent bars and restaurants within stumbling distance (particularly "Little H" the cuban bar on the corner which is amazing). The only downside is that you are a walk from the nearest metro, but that's not too big a problem. Oh, and the lift is tiny!
By the way, there's free in-room wifi so this is a reasonable choice for business or pleasure.

Room Tip: There are lots of different types of room; all are quiet. Some of the rooms have cooking facilities...

Stayed here for one night, when we ended up snowbound in Paris because all Thalys trains were cancelled.

After hearing the Thalys was cancelled, I booked this hotel on my iphone, from a McDonalds near the station. The last-minute rate was pretty good and the hotel was easy to walk to from the station, so it seemed a good option.

The hotel is located on a small side street in a residential area, and looks very classic from the outside. On the inside, the reception and bar area look very modern, but the stairwells look very old and tired, the carpet is threadbare in most places.

The room looks nice with modern furniture, and is pretty large. Our room had a sleeping room with a desk, a small kitchen with a table and a bathroom. The room was uncomfortably warm (it was, after all, snowing outside) and there was no way to turn off the heating. We had to cool the room a bit by opening the window slightly.

Everything is clean, the bed is comfortable and the wifi is fast and free. At night, deciding to make the best of our extra night, we walked to the Notre Dame, which was about 40 minutes away.

Though I didn't plan to end up here, it was a nice place which I would consider visiting again.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the inner courtyard have lousy views but are quiet at night.

Our daughter lives in Paris and booked this hotel for our visit. She scouted out several hotels in the area and picked the Alba Opera after speaking with the desk clerk, a guest and viewing a room. We stayed three nights at the beginning of our trip and two at the end. Our daughter picked a good one.
The hotel is located on a quiet cul-de-sac, the staff was friendly and helpful, the rooms are large and clean and the price is very reasonable for Paris. Our daughter warned us that the carpeting on the stairs and landings was much worn. On our arrival the carpet was being replaced on the stairs and all landings. A good breakfast was included and the server was pleasant.
Two pleasant stays and we would return without hesitation. Highly recommended.

We recently spent a week in room 44 of the Alba Opera. We got the superior room which was huge.....bedroom, bathroom, extra room with mini bar and desk which could accommodate an extra bed if needed. Loved our stay. Clean. Close to subway and train station. Great restaurants, cafes nearby at affordable prices.

I'm claustrophobic and normally avoid elevators. Read reviews regarding the "lift". After a couple of days of walking Up and down the stairs, I braved the elevator, and found to my surprise, I was fascinated by it. Yes, it is "tight", but I began to look forward to using it. It's fast, smooth, and you can look through the grill work as you go up and down. For those of you who wouldn't try it, you really missed an experience....I went in with my husband and by myself, always with a twinge of anticipation, and that familiar claustrophobic feeling. Use it. Chalk it up as another unique experience.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a charming and unique hotel. Staff were great.

Room Tip: Our rooms were way more than we needed. We upgraded based on reviews we read. When booking, just as...
